Lima Police: Keep basketball hoops off streets

LIMA — The Lima Police Department is reminding residents about the dangers of placing basketball hoops on city streets.

Hoops are illegal to place on city streets or treelawns. If police officers learn of a hoop on the roadway, they will first attempt to locate the owner of the hoop and request it be moved. If it is moved at that point, there will be no further police action on the matter.

If the owner cannot be located, a sticker will be placed on the pole alerting the owner that the pole must be moved within a few days. If that action is not taken, a misdemeanor citation can be assessed to the owner of the hoop.

“The goal of this is safety,” Sgt. Jason Garlock said. “We want to keep the motorists and the kids safe so everyone can have a fun, safe summer.”

Basketball hoops are also available at several Lima city parks, according to Parks and Recreation Director Ric Stolly.
