Lima’s Chipotle card readers infected by malware; cards breached

LIMA — The Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant chain listed the 3292 Elida Road store on its website as one of many Ohio locations affected by a security breach of the company’s point-of-sale credit and debit card reader devices.

According to the Chipotle website, an investigation into the incident led to the discovery of malware infecting the Chipotle machines. The malware was designed to capture credit and debit card numbers, the three-digit verification code on the back of cards and cardholder names.

The Chipotle website states the incident occurred between March 24 and April 18. The website also suggests customers who used their cards during this period check their bank and credit statements for unusual charges. It also suggests customers consider activating security freezes on cards used at the restaurant during the time of the incident. The site also gives potential fraud and identity theft victims contact information for credit companies and the Federal Trade Commission.

The website states the company has removed the malware from the point-of-sale card readers and is working with law enforcement during the investigation.

A phone call to the restaurant chain’s security incident hotline was not returned by deadline.
