Electric company warns people to be cautious when planting trees

OTTAWA — Paulding Putnam Electric Coop is urging people to be cautious when planting trees with power poles around.

People must take in account the type of tree they are planting and its potential for growth upward and horizontal. The recommended safety guideline is at least 20 feet away from the spot on the ground where power lines are above.

Trees that come in contact with powerlines can cause fires, shock and power outages.

People also should take in account and check with the proper agency to determine where underground utilities are located. Tree roots can damage electrical lines and pipes. People should call 811 for the underground utility locator before they dig.
