LIMA — Investigators have ruled out foul play for an inmate who died this week after being found unresponsive in the Allen County jail.
There were no signs of injuries from a beating or a stab wound on the body of 23-year-old Brady Lee Hoop of Kenton, said Lt. Mark Baker of the Allen County Sheriff’s Office.
An autopsy was performed this week at the Lucas County Coroner’s Office. Another remaining possibility sheriff investigators are looking at is a possible drug overdose, but results can take up to three months to be returned from the lab. The other possible was a seizure, which Hoop had some history of having, Baker said.
Hoop was found unresponsive Monday evening at the Allen County jail at 5:15 p.m. Correctional officers performed CPR and used a defibrillator while waiting for EMS to respond. Hoop was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 5:44 p.m., the sheriff’s office reported.
Hoop was in the jail awaiting transfer to the state prison system for a two-year sentencing for stealing from the elderly. He was sentenced April 5 to prison for a probation violation.
In July 2015, Hoop was arrested after someone called the police saying that two individuals attempted to collect money from residents in Shawnee Township. Shawnee Township Police Department investigators said Hoop and Lima resident Joshua Hinshaw were going door to door trying to collect money under the ruse they were Shawnee High School baseball players who were raising funds for a trip to Florida.
Hoop pleaded guilty to two charges of theft from the elderly, both fifth-degree felonies.
