LIMA — Three men accused in the killing of a man in Shawnee Township last month have been indicted on murder and other charges.
Gavin R. Lauck, 19, Collin Dysert, 20, and Dalton Duncan, 19, all were indicted this week on murder, involuntary manslaughter, trafficking in drugs and kidnapping, all with firearm specifications. Lauck, who allegedly fired a rifle, killing 20-year-old Damere Oliphant on March 27, was indicted on a second count of murder with a firearm.
Prosecutors often indict on multiple counts, even if there was only one death, if the actions in the alleged crime could fit more than one section of the murder law. A defendant, if convicted, only can be sentenced on one of the murder charges.
The men face up to life in prison on the charges.
The killing happened outside an apartment off Shawnee Road. Oliphant walked a short distance after he was shot at about 2:20 a.m. and collapsed near the closed Taco Bell restaurant. Police said there was a trail of blood from Dysert’s apartment to where Oliphant’s body was found.
Oliphant was shot once in the torso. The three men were arrested at Dysert’s apartment at 111 Cam Court, Apt. 42. Detectives said they have obtained confessions from the men, and the rifle used in the shooting has been recovered.
Police said more people could be charged in connection with Oliphant’s death, and the case remains under investigation.
