Putnam County man dies in farming accident

GREENSBURG TOWNSHIP — A Putnam County man died from injuries he suffered in a farming accident on Road I-14.

According to a report from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, the office received a call at 2:56 p.m. Monday concerning man who was trapped in a vehicle at 17122 Road I-14. After arriving at the scene, officers found Gordon A. Verhoff, 69, trapped between the frame and dump bed of a GMC 3500 dump truck.

The Sheriff’s Office said that it appeared Verhoff had just emptied a load of stone and was inspecting the underside of the dump bed when it unexpectedly dropped on him. Verhoff was declared dead from his injuries at the scene.

The accident remained under investigation late Monday.

Kalida Heavy Rescue, Kalida Fire Department and Kalida Police Department, Kalida EMS, Putnam County EMS and the Putnam County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.
