2 Lima men arrested after bystander struck by bullet

LIMA — Two men not old enough to legally purchase firearms were involved in a gunfight Sunday that injured an innocent man inside his home, police reported.

The man, who police only identified by his age of 58, was inside his apartment on the second floor when a bullet penetrated the wall and struck him. He was taken to a local hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Columbus, Lima Police Det. Steve Stechschulte said.

Police arrested Marvin Bridges Jr. and Jordan Hawthorne, both 20 and both of Lima, in connection with the shooting. Both are being held in the Allen County jail on suspicion of discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, Stechschulte said.

The shooting happened at about 10:40 p.m., when police were called to the 500 block of Hope Street over the report of shots fired in the area. Officers located several people in front of 1232 Hughes Ave., and found several spent shell casings in front of the home, Stechschulte said.

Police then received a call that a man in an apartment in the 500 block of Hope Street was hit by a bullet, Stechschulte said.

Lima police have said people not old enough or who have crimes that disqualify them from buying guns typically turn to the streets to buy guns stolen in burglaries that often are sold to buy drugs.
