Missing nutcracker returned in pieces to village of Wren, restitution made

WREN — A nutcracker display that went missing on Christmas Eve has been returned to the village of Wren.

The bad news is it was returned in pieces. The good news is the person who took the nutcracker paid roughly $800 in restitution to have it replaced.

Wren Mayor Monica Davis said the missing nutcracker was returned Jan. 6, almost two weeks after it was stolen. The thief, whom Davis didn’t identify, contacted the Wren Christmas Society before returning the shattered nutcracker to the organization.

Davis said charges will not be pursued against the person who took it.

“The person made full restitution, so we said we’d let it go,” Davis said. “It’s back home, and that’s all we wanted.”

The $800 in restitution will more than cover the cost to purchase and ship a new nutcracker, Davis said. Once purchased, the display will again join its three nutcracker companions on the streets of Wren during the holiday season.

Davis said it is likely that added security measures, such as chains and padlocks, will be taken to ensure this doesn’t happen again next year.

For now, the village and its Christmas Society are just happy that, for the most part, it all worked out in the end.

“Thank goodness they made it right,” Davis said of the person who took the nutcracker. “That’s all anyone could ask for.”
