Weight limits changed on 2 Allen County bridges

LIMA — Weight limit changes are coming to two Allen County bridges, according to the Allen County Engineer’s Office.

Meeting with county commissioners Thursday, county bridge maintenance superintendent Ron Meyer requested that the 20-ton weight limit on the Hume Road bridge near Interstate 75 be removed, opening the bridge up for all legal weight limits for traffic.

“I’m happy to say the structure has been replaced,” he told commissioners. “It can now handle all legal loads.”

Conversely, Meyer requested that the Delong Road bridge, which received a 15-ton weight limit last November, have its limit revised down even more — to 12 tons.

“In that structure, the beams continue to deteriorate,” he said.

Meyer noted that Shawnee schools uses that bridge, but he did not believe extending the weight limit would adversely affect that traffic.

“We spoke to Shawnee schools, and they’re mostly empty school buses when they cross that, so they should still be able to get across,” he said. “We are continuing to check that weekly. We’ll work on replacing that as soon as we can.”
