Lima News to host Recycling Collection Event

LIMA — Area residents are invited to bring their unwanted paint, electronics and paper to The Lima News for the newspaper’s first-ever Recycling Collection Event.

The event is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 30 in the parking lot at The Lima News, 3515 Elida Road.

There will be four stations set up in the parking lot. The first stop is paint recycling, followed by electronic recycling, newspaper recycling and document shredding. Workers will be on hand to unload recycled materials from each vehicle.

There is no charge to recycle, with the exception of latex paint. Participants must pay $1 for each container of latex paint. Oil-based, flammable, combustible and alkyd paints are not accepted, as well as sealers, roof coating and drywall mud. Paint recycling is provided by American Paint Recyclers.

Working and nonworking electronics will also be recycled thanks to Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley. Items accepted include: Computers, monitors, hard drives, printers (inkjet or laser), toner cartridges, keyboards/mice, scanners, speakers, cords and cables, cellphones, software, routers/switches, firewalls and servers.

The only form of electronics not accepted are televisions.

Paper recycling and shredding, provided by Gateway Recycling, includes the following items: Ledger paper, machine tape, advertisements, booklets/brochures, copy machine paper, colored paper, computer paper, envelopes, faxes, manila file folders, greeting cards, laser printer paper, legal pad paper, Post-It notes, NCR paper, receipts and any type of white paper.

Items that are not acceptable for shredding include phone books, magazines, binders, books, plastic folders, food and candy wrappers, waxed paper, napkins, and Styrofoam containers.

Newspapers will be recycled at a separate station.

Pam Stricker, publisher of The Lima News, said the event is a way to serve the community and the Earth.

“It’s a responsibility we should be taking in the community, and so we wanted to provide that service while we’re all thinking about Earth Day and keeping our planet more beautiful,” Stricker said. “I think we’re all supposed to be good stewards of the Earth, and this is one way we can do that.”

There is no limit to the amount of recycled material a person can bring, though Stricker said they might have to start cutting people off if the number of recyclables brought in becomes overwhelming.
