Nevada man killed in crash on U.S. 33

WAPAKONETA — A 37-year-old Las Vegas man was killed in a crash on U.S. 33 Thursday night.

Peter Charles Weitz was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center by helicopter and died a short time later. The driver of the vehicle, Peter Carl Weitz, 66, of Nevada, was taken to St. Rita’s with serious injuries, Lt. J.S. Carrico of the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported.

The crash happened at 5:13 p.m. Thursday on U.S. 33 east of Santa Fe Line Road, about two miles west of New Hampshire. Douglas M. Stearly, 19, of Pennsylvania, was driving a pickup truck west on U.S. 33. He drove left of center to avoid traffic that slowed in front of him, Carrico reported.

Weitz attempted to drive off the right side of the road to avoid the crash, but both pickup trucks collided head on. Stearly was not seriously injured and did not go to the hospital, Carrico reported.

None of the three involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. The crash remains under investigation, Carrico reported.

The crash and its aftermath closed U.S. 33 Thursday night for about two hours.
