4 LCC alumni to be inducted into Hall of Fame

LIMA — Lima Central Catholic High School will induct four people into the 2016 Hall of Fame on Friday. An awards dinner will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the old gym at LCC.

Francis “Jack” Sliemers, a 1947 graduate of St. Gerard High School, will be inducted for his professional achievement in polymer research.

During his 31-year tenure at Battelle Memorial Institute in Columbus, Sliemers led project research in the areas of polymer chemistry, polymer characterization and polymeric materials in solar energy and specialized electrical applications. Sliemers wrote more than 40 technical papers and authored or co-authored several U.S. and foreign patents.

Robert “Bo” Contini, who is being inducted for his service to LCC, was instrumental in campaigning for and completing the LCC Sports Field, and Contini’s Hawthorne Hills was the home course for the LCC golf team.

He spent hours instructing hundreds of students on how to improve their game and quietly donated golf equipment to children who had no other means to obtain it, according to a news release. Contini is also a member of CIAO and its pasta dinner committee, which has provided college scholarships to many LCC students.

James Bourk, a 1950 graduate of St. Rose High School, is being inducted for community service.

Following graduation, Bourk joined the U.S. Air Force and served until 1955. In 1992, he joined the city of Lima as public works director. In that position, Bourk was active with the city’s Star Spangled Spectacular, a member of the Civic Center Board and past president of the Board of Trustees.

Bourk was appointed to the LCC Business Affairs Committee, served on the Foundation Committee, volunteered for the LCC Carnival and was instrumental in planning and erecting the Memorial to Catholic Veterans.

The final inductee will be David Wellmeier, a 1992 graduate of LCC, for athletic achievement.

Wellmeier was the 1992 Division III State Champion in Wrestling for LCC in his weight class of 145. His record senior year was 45-0, and he had a four-year varsity career record of 139-14.

While a student at Ohio Northern University, he was an NCAA All-American in 1994.

Following Friday’s awards dinner, the newest members of the LCC Hall of Fame will be honored at halftime during the LCC basketball game. A reception will follow at Knights of Columbus Hall.

Tickets for the Hall of Fame dinner are $12, and are available in the business office at LCC.
