Trash bin catches fire at Wapakoneta rubber plant

A fire at a Wapakoneta rubber facility did not result in any injuries or damage to the plant, according to the Wapakoneta Fire Department.

The department was notified of the fire at 11:38 a.m., which was localized to a trash bin containing scrap rubber in the rear of the building. The fire sent a large amount of black smoke into the air, smoke that was visible from Interstate 75.

Firefighters were able to put out the fire quickly, but the heat left the trash bin warped to the point where its lid would not close. Firefighters searched the building and found no one inside.

While the exact cause of the fire was unknown, department officials suspect that it could have been either from rubber heated in the manufacturing process smoldering in the trash bin or possible spontaneous combustion.
