Flood forces partial closure of wastewater plant

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Flooding along the Ottawa River prompted the shutdown of part of the Shawnee II Wastewater Treatment Plant at 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the Allen County Sanitary Engineers Department, floodwaters breached several of the buildings at the plant, including the process building containing the main power feed.

The county is maintaining primary treatment of the township’s wastewater, including pumping the water into settling tanks and letting clearer water run into the stream. County officials maintain that any public impact will be minimal. However, anyone experiencing any problems was asked to call 888-229-9645.

Normal operations will resume as soon as the floodwaters have receded to a safe level and the equipment has been cleaned.
