Roses and Thorns

There are plenty of newly budding roses to be found on the bush this week:

Rose: To Jerry Hoersten, of Delphos. His idea was used in the nationally syndicated cartoon “Pluggers” appearing this Monday, about the first and fourth quarters of football being the most exciting since you nap through the other two. He was also featured at least seven other times in the past 10 years.

Thorn: To Jeremy Kindle, of Lima. He’ll spend 94 years in prison for bringing young boys into his home, sometimes as foster children, and then raping them. This heartbreaking case shook up the structure at Allen County Children Services.

Roses: To the Kill, Stump and Young families. They brought the first babies of 2022 into the region.

Roses: To the hospital staffs of Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, Lima Memorial Health System and Mercy Health-St. Rita’s. They brought those children into the world over a holiday weekend when many of us had our feet propped up and enjoyed the college bowl games.

Thorn: To Lima council for appointing Carla Thompson to the vacant 3rd Ward seat. We understand she was the only person to even try to file for the seat in the election but had reasons her paperwork was thrown out. Everything would’ve looked more transparent if you’d just invited the public to apply for the position, held interviews and then selected someone. Even if you selected Thompson again, at least the process would’ve been open to the public.

Rose: To Curt and Brent Shafer. They recently retired, passing on The Pizzeria chain in Putnam County to the next generation. They bought one restaurant in 1981 and expanded throughout the county.
