Roses and Thorns

For years, Jim Krumel ended each of his weekly columns with his popular Roses and Thorns.

With his retirement Friday, there’s a new gardener tending this weekly feature in a new location on our opinion pages. We’ll keep the spirit of recognizing the region’s highs and lows alive each week, especially using the suggestions of our faithful readers.

Rose: The aptly named Trey Sauter hit an amazing buzzer-beater for Columbus Grove’s boys basketball team against Fort Jennings on Wednesday night. He took an inbounds pass to the three-point line and launched a three-quarter court shot. The ball swished through the net. It’s immortalized on Sauter’s Twitter page, @SautterTrey. The Bulldogs won, 59-46.

Thorn: There just aren’t enough home COVID tests available. The library and Allen County Public Health both exhausted their supplies this week.

Rose: Victor’s Taco Shop will open it ninth location in a long-vacant restaurant on Cable Road.

Thorn: Alcohol and drugs are believed to be behind an incident where a Belle Center man struck an Allen County residence recently. Johnny Bailey Sr., 53, died Wednesday from his injuries.

Rose: To Jim Krumel, who led the newspaper through some difficult times but maintained a push for fairness. His presence will still be felt for years to come.
