President-elect Joe Biden campaigned on the slogan that he wanted to be the president for “all Americans” and that he wanted to mend a fractured nation.
It sounded good. And it was probably heart-felt. But saying something and actually doing it are two different things. He’s been around politics long enough to know how it works. He’s also been around long enough to know that when you’re served a golden opportunity, you take advantage of it.
Biden doesn’t have to wait until he is sworn in as the 46th president of the United States one week from today. He could take a huge step in mending the divisiveness America is now experiencing by telling House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to knock off the talk of impeaching Donald Trump.
In saying that, by know means are we excusing Trump’s behavior of encouraging a mob to storm the Capitol. Let’s be clear. Trump was the one responsible for the insurrection. He stirred up his frenzied followers by telling them to “fight like hell” on their way to Capitol Hill to overturn the election results.
And Trump’s claims that uncounted votes enabled Biden to win are ludicrous. Trump lost by more than 7 million votes and a 306-232 margin in the Electoral College. That’s a lot of miscounting. Another way to look at it: This would be like the Ohio State Buckeyes claiming today that not all their points were counted Monday night against Alabama, and the Buckeyes really won 54-52.
But we’re dealing with politics at its worse. It is hard for us to believe Pelosi’s push for impeachment has anything to do with what’s good for America. It feels more like a vindictive payback to a man she despises.
House Democrats, on Tuesday, were calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove the president from office. Pelosi warned if Pence doesn’t act within 24 hours, the House would move to impeach the president as early as Wednesday.
America doesn’t need to go through another impeachment trial, one that many pundits feel would grab headlines well into next year? It’s time to heal. Time to put Trump behind us. Time to move forward.
