APPOINTMENTS

Auglaize County names United Way chairman

Doug Spencer has been named the 2015 chairman of the United Way of Auglaize County Campaign.

The chairman’s responsibilities include seeking new cabinet members, attending special events for the campaign and working to plan and implement the fundraising effort.

Spencer was first elected to the Auglaize County commissioners in 2006 and serves this year as the board’s president. He is a licensed property and casualty insurance agent with the Laura Yelton State Farm Agency, continues to work with St. Marys City Schools as a substitute teacher and bus driver and is the featured basketball commentator on WKKI radio.

Spencer and his wife, Andrea, have three children, Howie, 14; Lucy, 12; and Charley, 10.

AWARDS

Mosher wins Health Care Worker of the Year

Tim Mosher, St. Rita’s nurse practitioner, has been selected as the Health Care Worker of the Year. He was selected out of 56 nominees. The 2015 Albert E. Dyckes health Care Worker of the Year Award is presented to one Ohio caregiver who is a great leader, reflects the mission and values of their organization, gives back to the community and characteristically goes beyond the call of duty. Mosher was presented with the award on June 9.

Moser spent his first career with the Shawnee Township Fire Department and retired as fire chief. He later joined St. Rita’s emergency department and now serves as a nurse practitioner with St. Rita’s Urgent Care.

He traveled a number of times to Haiti, Jamaica, Lebanon, Honduras and Peru providing medical support to those in need. Recently, Mosher traveled to West Africa to join the fight against ebola. He was at the epicenter of the world health crisis, as he cared for Dr. Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol and helped to administer the experimental ZMapp.

He was also part of the crew who received the Ohio EMS Star of Life Award for successfully performing a field tracheostomy on an 11-year-old male choking on a hot dog.

Shutt receives distinguished alumni award

Scott Shutt was honored by Ohio Northern University with a distinguished alumni award.

Shutt earned a degree in electrical engineering from ONU in 1983. He was a member of the jazz ensemble and the concert and symphonic bands during his time at ONU. He was also a member of the student senate, Tau Beta Pi and Omicron Delta Kappa, the leadership honorary on campus. After graduating, Shutt joined the family business as a member of the Kewpee Hamburgers team.

He is the vice chair of the Lima Memorial Hospital Foundation and a board member for Allen County Public Health. Shutt has served on the Appleseed Ridge Girl Scout Council. The Shutt family has sponsored the annual ONU Holiday Spectacular for the past 20 yeas with performances in Lima and at the Freed Center for the Performing Arts.

Shutt and his wife Terri, have been married for 29 years and have two children, Emily, an Ohio Northern University graduate and Samuel, a student at The Ohio State University.

Raabe Ford Lincoln awarded

Raabe Ford Lincoln, of Delphos has been recognized with the 2014 President’s Award by Ford Motor Company. This award honors dealerships that have excelled in automotive retailing in 2014 by providing exceptional customer service and satisfaction.

In order to achieve the President’s Award, dealers must exceed customer expectations every day in every department. Raabe Ford Lincoln has won this award eight times.

Ackerman receives award

Lima schools Superintendent Jill Ackerman received this year’s School Nutrition Association of Ohio most valuable superintendent award.

The award recognizes school officials who have been instrumental in building a child-friendly nutrition environment. Candidates for the award must be supportive of nutrition services and committed to the philosophy that children require instruction and guidance if they are going to make healthful food choices.

Ackerman has been a longtime supporter of providing healthy meals and teaching students to make healthy choices. She has been supportive of grans like the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Grant to help the district accomplish this. She led efforts for the Community Eligibility Program, which ensures that all students in the school district get free breakfast and lunch.

Most recently, Ackerman has been a strong supporter of the Farm to School initiative the district has undertaken. The initiative will bring gardens, orchards and edible landscapes to South Science and Technology Magnet School. The district is currently seeking funding to also have a greenhouse on the property.

The award was presented June 10 at the School Nutrition Association of Ohio’s annual conference at Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Sandusky. Ackerman was nominated by Carrie Woodruff, food service director for Lima schools.

Sanchez receives small business champion award

Tracie Sanchez, owner of Lima Pallet Company in Lima, has received the 2015 Small Business Champion award from the National Federation of Independent Business/Ohio, the state’s leading small business association. Sanchez has been an active member of NFIB fro 23 years and is a current member of the NFIB/Ohio statewide leadership council. In addition, she was a founding member of the group’s Lima Area Action Council during her tenure.

Each year, NFIB/Ohio names a small business champion from among its membership of more than 25,000 Ohio small businesses. This individual not only gives of his/her time and resources to promote small-business causes through involvement in NFIB activities, but also must demonstrate a spirit of service toward the community and a commitment to advancing the concept of free enterprise.

Perry proTech receives award

Konica Minolta Business Solutions announced that Perry proTech, of Lima has been honored with a 2015 Pro-Tech Service Award. The Pro-Tech Award recognizes Konica Minolta dealerships that demonstrate the highest commitment to customer support and satisfaction.

This is the tenth consecutive year that Perry proTech has been a Pro-Tech Service Award winner. Headed by Barry Clark, CEO, Perry proTech is dedicated to delivering professional, reliable service and maximum performance for Konica Minolta’s award-winning solutions.

Preschool program obtains highest rating

The preschool program at Unity Elementary School received a 5-Star Rating from the Ohio Department of Education. The program at Heritage Elementary School received the same rating last year and was able to maintain the highest rating this year.

The ratings come after the state conducts a Step Up to Quality on-site verification. The state looks at curriculum, lesson plans, staff education and quality of staff in conducting its verification. Five is the highest rating, with a three rating considered acceptable.

Blanchard Valley Hospital recognized

Blanchard Valley Hospital has been named one of the Becker’s Hospital Review “100 Great Community Hospitals” in the United States for 2015.

This award comes after Blanchard Valley Hospital was named among the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals in March by Truven Health Analytics.

The Becker’s Hospital Review 100 Great Community Hospitals list is based on a hospital’s quality, accolades and service to its community. The editorial team selected hospitals for inclusion based on various rankings and awards, including those from iVantage Health Analytics, Truven Health Analytics, Healthgrades and CareChex.

Metokote receives Honda supplier award

MetoKote Corporation’s facility in Huber Heights was recognized at the American Honda Supplier Conference. Honda honored 53 suppliers for outstanding performance in supplying service parts that serve the needs of customers after they have purchased Honda and Acura vehicles. This is the second year in a row that the Huber Heights facility has achieved this recognition.

MetoKote has provided American Honda with service sheet metal parts for more than 21 years, including large bulk heads, bumper assemblies and various small brackets.

MetoKote Corporation is headquartered in Lima.

Anytime Fitness named No. 1 franchise

Entrepreneur magazine ranked Anytime Fitness number one on its Franchise 500 list. Now, Entrepreneur magazine has named Anytime Fitness number one as the top global franchise.

Anytime Fitness outranked Subway, McDonald’s and the Hampton Inn, as well as every other franchise to take the No. 1 spot.

For eight years, Anytime Fitness has been the fastest-growing fitness club chain in the world averaging more than 300 new clubs each year. By the end of this year, Anytime Fitness will open its 3,000th franchised unit, accomplished in less than 13 years.

Hancock-Wood Electric announces elections

Hancock-Wood Electric Co-op welcomes new members to its board.

In District 4, Marlene Barker was elected to the board. Barker was elected to the board of trustees in 2006 and was installed as a board officer in 2014 and serves as its assistant secretary/treasurer. Edward Ingold has been elected in District 5. Ingold is a Hancock County Health Trustee and a trustee of Hancock County Park District Foundation. He is a former Hancock County Commissioner.

ACCREDITATION

The Marsh Foundation awarded three-year accreditation

The Marsh Foundation, of Van Wert, has been re-accredited for a period of three years for its Case Management/Service Coordination: Mental Health (Children and Adolescents); Outpatient Treatment: Mental Health (Adults); and Outpatient Treatment: Mental Health (Children and Adolescents) programs. The latest accreditation is the fourth consecutive Three-Year Accreditation that the international accrediting body has awarded to The Marsh Foundation.

This accreditation represents the highest level of accreditation that can be awarded to an organization and shows the organization’s substantial conformance to standards. An organization receiving a Three-Year Accreditation has put itself through a rigorous peer review process and has demonstrated to a team of surveyors during an on-site visit that its programs and services are of the highest quality, measurable and accountable.

Sleep Center receives accreditation

The Van Wert County Hospital Sleep Center in Van Wert received program accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.

To receive accreditation for a five-year period, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. These standards address core areas such as personnel, facility and equipment, policies and procedures, data acquisition, patient care and quality assurance. The sleep center’s goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community it serves.

The Van Wert County Hospital Sleep Center is accredited to treat a variety of sleep disorders and disturbances including obstructive sleep apnea, central sleep apnea, insomnia,parasomnias, periodic limb movement, shift work disorder and more.

Agency awarded home health care accreditation

Bridge Home Health & Hospice has earned The Joint Commission gold seal of approval for home care accreditation. The gold seal of approval is a symbol of quality that reflects an organization’s commitment to providing safe and effective care.

To earn this accreditation, Bridge Home Health & Hospice underwent an on-site survey. During the survey, compliance with home care standards reflecting key organization areas was evaluated, including the provision of care, treatment and services, emergency management, human resources, individual rights and responsibilities and leadership.

CERTIFICATIONS

Frueh completes certification

Marilyn Frueh completed her executive coaching certification from the Hudson Institute in Santa Barbara, California.

The Hudson Institute is recognized worldwide as a premier leadership and coaching training institution. Frueh is currently employed by The Ohio State University in Columbus in the area of leadership and organizational effectiveness and works as an internal coach to the top 150 leaders at Ohio State.

PROMOTIONS

Leite promoted at OSU-Lima

Dr. Fabio Leite, associate professor of psychology, has been named the new associate dean. In his new role, Dr. Leite will be responsible for the strategic planning of academic programming across all disciplines, directly connected with the education of all Ohio State Lima students.

He joined the Ohio State University Department of Psychology in 2005 as a researcher in Columbus. In 2007, he became an assistant professor on the Lima campus. Dr. Leite has received awards including undergraduate research and mentorship awards, a dedication and excellence in teaching award, the Ohio State Lima outstanding teaching award and the Ohio State Lima outstanding scholar award. Most recently, he received the 2015 faculty award for student mentorship for his extensive mentoring of undergraduate students at Ohio State Lima.

Dr. Leite received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Washington College in Maryland, his MBA from the Federal University in Brazil and his master’s and doctorate in social science from the Institute for Mathematical Behavioral Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.

OTHER RECOGNITION

Elks donate money

On June 11, the Ohio Elks Associated made a donation to St. Rita’s Medical Center’s pediatric and adolescent rehab center.

St. Rita’s will use the funds for equipment int he center and to help children with developmental issues to access the care they need.

With this latest donation, the Elks has donated more than $336,000 since its first donation.

Swickrath graduates from fellowship

Brandie Swickrath, a magistrate with the Juvenile Division of the Allen County Common Pleas Court graduated June 9, from a Fellowship with the Ohio State Bar Foundation.

The Ohio State Bar Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Ohio State Bar Association. The mission of it is to promote the pursuit of justice and the public understanding of the rule of law through personal service.

Swickrath spent a year volunteering her time and service to outreach programs throughout the state of Ohio as well as to programs in the Lima-Allen County community. She was appointed to her current position with the Court in 2011 by the Honorable Judge Glenn H. Derryberry.

Ohio State Bar Foundation inducts Fellows

The Ohio State Bar Foundation inducted retired judge David Faulkner and Matt Huffman as Fellows at the Thomas J. Moyer Ohio Judicial Center on June 9th. Supreme Court of Ohio Chief Justice Maureen O’Connor and Ohio State Bar Foundation president Lee Belardo presided over the ceremony and reception.

Faulkner, of Kenton, served both on the Hardin County Municipal Court and on the Hardin County Common Pleas Court. He is a member of the Rotary Club, serving as president twice, and is a member and past presiding officer of all Local Masonic Bodies.

Matt Huffman, of Lima, is a corporate law and commercial litigation lawyer at Huffman, Kelley, Brock & Gottschalk LLC. In 2006, Huffman was elected as the 4th District Representative in the Ohio State House of Representatives and served as Speaker Pro-Tempore in his final term.

The Ohio State Bar Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Ohio State Bar Association and promotes the pursuit of justice and public understanding of the rule of law. A new class of civil-minded lawyers is inducted each year. These lawyers volunteer their time for a year of service to outreach programs around Ohio that help the public better understand the law.

To become a Fellow, lawyers must first be nominated by their peers before going through a selection process and committing their time to outreach programs while helping fund the organizations statewide grant-making program.

Lima Memorial recognizes associates

Lima Memorial Health System honored is associates recently.

Debra Harter, Patricia Spring, Anita Ernest and Bethel Hurles were honored for 40 years of service.

Gloria Bratton was recognized for 45 years of service.

Connie Callahan was honored for 50 years of service.

Fastsigns celebrates fifth anniversary

Fastsigns of Lima/West Central Ohio celebrates its fifth anniversary. It is owned by Mark Engle.

Since opening, Fastsigns has served more than 2,500 customers.

Engle opened Fastsigns of Lima/West Central Ohio in May 2010 with two other employees and has since expanded to five full-time employees and seasonal part-time positions for college students. The business can handle all of its customers’ visual marketing needs, from business cards to large electrical signs on buildings and everything in between.

The facility is a 6,000 square foot facility which includes office, design and production space, along with a large workshop in the back of the building to cut and prepare materials. The center also has an indoor vehicle bay that allows the team to install vehicle graphics regardless of weather conditions and a bucket truck for large outdoor installations.

The business has recently expanded to producing and installing directional signs to direct traffic around a customers’ property, rebranding an entire building or campus, producing large volume of labels and decals and more.

Engle plans to add a flatbed printer to improve efficiency and meet the high demand for large volume projects; add an e-commerce website so that customers can order products directly online; and launch an interactive Point of Sale system that allows customers to monitor their order through the production process.
