Sentencing dates set for trio in Auglaize County killing

TOLEDO — Two Auglaize County women and a resident of South Africa will be sentenced Oct. 1 in U.S. District Court for Northern Ohio for charges linked to the April 22 death of 36-year-old Timothy Hovanec.

Amanda Hovanec in February pleaded to four federal charges in the death of her estranged husband. Investigators said Timothy Hovanec died from a lethal injection of the controlled substance etorphine — also known as M99 — when it was administered into his shoulder by Amanda Hovanec.

During a February hearing Hovanec pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to import a controlled substance, importation of a controlled substance, conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute of a controlled substance and distribution of a controlled substance that resulted in death.

Anthony Theodorou of South Africa, who faced identical charges, entered into an agreement with federal prosecutors earlier this week and pleaded guilty to four of the five counts against him.

Anita Green, Amanda Hovanec’s mother, pleaded guilty to a felony count of being an accessory after the fact in the disposal of Hovanec’s body.

The sentencing hearings for Hovanec, Green and Theodorou will be held Oct. 1 at 9 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., respectively.
