Civic Center to host dance recital

LIMA — Steppin’ Out Dance Center is set to have its 31st showcase with two shows this weekend.

Unstoppable will be at 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday, April 27 at Veterans Memorial Civic Center in Lima, and director Shifawn Youngpeter said the event will feature 185 dancers from ages one to 18.

“It’s a show that is packed full of local talent, exciting music and choreography,” she said. “There is something for everyone to come and enjoy, including lots of lighting and visuals.”

The two shows will even feature mothers of the dancers participating in the show.

“It should be fun,” Youngpeter added. “They’re hilarious.”

Solo showcases will be featured 45 minutes before each show.

“Our company members from our competitive team will present their solos, duets and trios before the show starts to entertain people while they’re taking their seats,” Youngpeter said.

But Youngpeter said one performance will stand out.

“We have a ‘Star Wars’ ballet that is very entertaining,” she said. “We just put on a really good show every year. It’s a really affordable, great time that is fun for the family.”

Youngpeter said the significance of the 31st year of the showcase is not lost on her.

“I’m looking forward to watching my students get up there to perform,” she said. “They work so hard all year long to get on stage and show everyone what they’re capable of and I’m just super proud. It’s just exciting to sit back for 31 years and enjoy the fruits of their labor.”

Youngpeter said a lot of work went into the show.

“Students and staff poured their hearts and souls into the annual recital,” she said. “It’s exciting to watch them get up there and perform.”
