Police: Lima man fed woman a poisonous drink

LIMA — A Lima man who reportedly tried to convince a woman to ingest a drink that contained poison has been charged with attempted murder.

Daniel Elliott, 26, was arrested March 22 and was bound over to Allen County Common Pleas Court six days later after waiving his right to a preliminary hearing. His bond was set at $500,000.

A transcript from Lima Municipal Court states that Elliott called police on March 20 to report he was concerned about the safety of a woman he said had been poisoned a few days earlier. He was concerned she was going to die in Ottawa, Illinois, according to court records.

The Lima man, who investigators noted was “not making much sense,” explained that someone gave the woman Clorox bleach to drink and that Lima police needed to contact Illinois officials to check on her.

After contacting local authorities, court records show, Elliott then called Illinois law enforcement officials and reported he and others had tried to make the woman drink a poison concoction, telling her it was alcohol or medicine. Illinois police contacted the woman, who said she had been given a suspect drink but took only a sip.

It was also learned that around that same time the Allen County Sheriff’s Office had responded to a home on South Roberts Avenue in Lima where Elliott had reportedly attempted to force entry into his parents’ home.

Elliott was arrested for suspicion of burglary. While speaking with police he said he gave the woman a potentially lethal beverage because he was angry over her abusiveness toward her children and was fearful for their safety.

His case is expected to be presented to an upcoming session of the Allen County grand jury.
