PERRY TOWNSHIP – Perry’s Hunter Scott was in total command on the pitching mound in Thursday’s non-conference baseball game against visiting Waynesfield-Goshen.
The left-handed Scott allowed just one base hit and one run in his 5 2/3 innings of work as Perry pulled away for a 6-1 victory over Waynesfield-Goshen.
With the win, Perry improved to 3-0 overall. Waynesfield-Goshen slipped to 0-2.
These two teams will play again later this spring in a Northwest Central Conference matchup.
Waynesfield-Goshen’s first and only hit of Thursday’s game came in the sixth inning. Landon DeWitt had a two-out single for the Tigers.
In the sixth inning, Brady Shively moved over from his shortstop position to close out the game on the mound for Perry.
Scott struck out 12 and walked two batters. He threw 92 pitches on the night. Scott had a stretch from late in the first inning through most of the sixth where he retired 14 consecutive batters.
Perry coach Mark Hoersten said Scott’s pitch count was not the only thing he had to consider.
“Coming in (to the sixth inning), he (Scott) was flirting with a no-hitter. That was playing into it as well. I was sitting there thinking, ‘It’s pretty early in the year’,” Hoersten said with a grin. “But he plays all the time. He plays in the fall. He plays all summer. He’s a baseball player. So, he’s used to it, even though it’s early. So, we wanted him to have it (a no-hitter) if it was possible.”
Scott added, “Early on, I was getting deep in the counts and that brought my pitch count up. I want to keep working and keep getting better. There’s always room for improvement, but I’m pretty happy with tonight.”
Offensively, it took a while for Perry to register its first base hit against W-G starting pitcher Jace Kaufman.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Brady Shively singled to erase Kaufman’s bid for a no-hitter. The Commodores scored five runs on four hits in the fifth to pull out to a 5-0 lead.
W-G scored its lone run in the sixth on a groundout by Jace Kaufman that scored Dalton Jordan from third base. Jordan reached first on an error. Jordan advanced to second with a stolen base, and then eventually moved over to third on a passed ball.
Brodey Douce led Perry at the plate, going 2 for 4. In the big fifth inning for the Commodores, Douce smacked a double that plated two runs. He also scored two runs. Tate Essex went 2 for 4 with two RBI for Perry.
Warmup for PCL play
OTTOVILLE – It’s early in the baseball season and teams are trying to find their identities.
In Wednesday’s non-league matchup between Fort Jennings and Ottoville, Fort Jennings displayed some of the traits it already possesses as it pulled away from Ottoville for a convincing 16-5 run-rule victory in the sixth inning at Ottoville.
If a team leads by at least 10 runs through five innings the game is over before the normal seven innings are played.
Offensively, Fort Jennings pounded eight base hits and capitalized on the base paths. Defensively, the Musketeers’ pitching staff scattered just six hits and forced Ottoville to strand 12 baserunners.
Fort Jennings and Ottoville both compete in the Putnam County League. However, Wednesday’s matchup was a non-league affair. The two teams will face off later in the season in a PCL matchup.
With Wednesday’s win, Fort Jennings improved to 2-1 overall and is 0-1 in the PCL. Ottoville slipped to 0-2 overall and 0-0 in PCL action.
Evan Ellerbrock led Fort Jennings at the plate on Wednesday, going 2 for 4 with four RBI.
With bases loaded in the fourth inning, Ellerbock smacked a bases-clearing double to help lead the Musketeers to a huge six-run inning.
“Evan Ellerbrock hit the ball. … He terrorized the ball today. But really what the story was – our running on the base paths,” Fort Jennings coach Matt Dube said. “Owen Calvelage (2 for 2) had six or seven steals. We were very active on the base paths, but that wasn’t with signs, necessarily. Our guys were getting reads on the pitcher and took extra bases when we needed to and put the pressure on them (Ottoville). That’s what we’re built upon. We have deep pitching. Our offense has to be there, and we have to be aggressive on the base paths.”
Carson Gilchriest got the starting nod on the pitching mound for Fort Jennings. Gilchriest worked four innings before being replaced by Sam Dube, who closed out the game. Gilchriest scattered five hits, struck out four and walked six. He threw 79 pitches.
Keaton Schnipke started on the mound for Ottoville. Schnipke pitched 3 1/3 innings before being lifted. Schnipke was tabbed for eight runs on five hits. He stuck out two, walked five and hit a batter. Schnipke tossed 66 pitches.

• Kaden Moore of Wapakoneta threw a five-inning no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in a 13-0 win over Benjamin Logan.
• Ryan McGue of Elida pitched five innings of one-hit ball to pick up the victory against Columbus Grove.
• Blake Boehm of Cory-Rawson tossed a complete game, limiting Ada to a pair of unearned runs on four hits with 16 strikeouts.
• Jackson Thompson of Allen East struck out 12 batters over 6 2/3 innings to get the win over Arlington.
• Griffin Klausing of Kalida limited McComb to a pair of unearned runs in five innings.
• JJ Schneiders of LCC struck out the side in the seventh inning to pick up the save against Lima Senior.
• Ty Buckland of Ottawa-Glandorf went six innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits to get the win over Miller City.
• Joel Rasor picked up the save in Bath’s two-run victory over Wayne Trace.
• Celina’s Brady Steinbrunner threw a seven-inning no-hitter in the Bulldogs’ 3-0 win over New Bremen.
• Brayden VanHorn of Bath struck out 11 batters, walked two, and allowed three runs on four hits in a 10-3 win over Allen East.
• Brent Koenig picked up the win for Miller City after allowing one earned run in five innings against Fort Jennings.
• Preston Evans of Perry tossed 5.2 innings, struck out six batters and allowed one earned run to get the win over Jackson Center.
• Hardin Northern’s Xander Wilson threw a complete game shutout against North Baltimore, striking out 14 batters and allowing just two hits.
• Kade Smith of Kenton went six innings, allowing one earned run on three hits against Indian Lake.
