Van Wert to take ‘Slow Ride’ with Foghat

VAN WERT — A legendary band is set to take the Niswonger Performing Arts Center stage Friday.

Foghat, the group behind hits like “Slow Ride” and a cover of “I Just Wanna Make Love to You,” will bring their signature brand of blues rock to Van Wert with a show at 7:30 p.m.

“It’s such a great band and it’s such a good time playing with these guys,” lead singer Scott Holt said. “Our new record is out now and it’s charting and we’re proud of that and we have fun playing live. We’re just looking forward to performing and entertaining the folks.”

Holt added that performing with such a legendary group is a highlight of his life.

“I’ve been in some really great bands and I think this is probably the best band I’ve ever played with,” he said. “We have more fun, we love each other and we love playing together. It’s just all positive.”

Even though Holt might not be a founding member he promised fans all of the familiar classics.

“The goal is for everyone to come back and see us again so they’re going to hear all of their favorite Foghat songs,” he said. “But they’ll also get stuff off the new record and a couple of surprises that we throw into the show. It should be fun for everybody.”

Lucky fans might even see Holt around town before the day of the show.

“We get into town the day before the show so I like to get out and kind of walk around the town to get a vibe for where we are,” he said. “I like to interact with some of the locals and just get a sense of the community. I find that that helps on the night when you’re playing because you can relate to the folks that you’re trying to entertain, but every town is different and has its own character.”

Foghat, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, is still going strong with original member, drummer Roger Earl.

“I’ve talked to Roger a lot about the reason why there’s such a strong shelflife to Foghat’s music,” Holt said. “Music in general is a powerful force because it can transcend all boundaries and even time. I first heard ‘Slow Ride’ when I was in high school those things are indelible because it will be around forever and it’s a great song that everyone knows.”

If Holt’s goals are anything to go by, fans should come away with great memories.

“We play with maximum energy and we’re not going to let you not be entertained,” he said. My goal is to give you an experience that when you’re leaving the venue makes you want to see us again.”
