Mural showcases past and present of Allen County

LIMA — The history of the Lima/Allen County region is being met with the present and future to come. The Visit Greater Lima unveiled a new mural in its downtown office located at 144 S. Main St., Suite 101. Tourism Marketing Manager Jessica Lammers wanted a place for tourists to take pictures at the start of the county.

“We know we are going to have an abundance of people coming in for the eclipse,” Lammers said. “That is where the idea started. I also thought we should showcase our past and then show our present — it shows our growth and how far we have come.”

The pictures were given to Lammers from the museums throughout the county. Lammers then combined the pictures and created the mural.

“It is a fun piece,” Lammers said. “Allen County Museum, Spencervile Museum and Delphos Canal Commission Museum: That is how we were able to get all of these photos. It was hard to pick and choose but I tried to incorporate at least one photo of each big area in our county.”

The mural includes photographs from the Ohio Theatre, the Delphos Canal, the Allen County Fairgrounds and the Villager Burger. The newest murals also include pictures from recent events throughout the county.

“The idea was to resemble a postcard,” Lammers said. “Greetings from greater Lima. People can come and take pictures in front of it — We have a Lima GeoTrail. Geocachers will come in and get their coins. Now we have this to add in the background.”

The organization is preparing for the upcoming solar eclipse and selling merchandise for community members to purchase.

“Anyone who wants to come in and take pictures is welcome to do that,” Lammers said. “We also released a new visitors guide. Community members can download it or pick up a copy. We mailed them out and they are free of charge. It is just a nice welcome opener for those who are considering coming here.”
