Girls basketball notebook: Auchmuty has record-setting night against Bluffton

BLUFFTON — The saying “records are made to be broken” is often thrown around in the world of sports. But certain records are meant to be broken by certain people.

That was definitely the case on Thursday night when Lauryn Auchmuty of Columbus Grove broke a record set by her former teammate Kenzie King for most 3-point field goals in a single game.

Auchmuty hit 10 threes, nine of them in the first half, and finished with 34 points in Columbus Grove’s 52-19 win over Bluffton (7-14). The Bulldogs are now 16-4 on the year.

For Auchmuty, breaking King’s record was extremely meaningful, especially since the two players shared the court during their respective freshman and senior seasons.

“It’s really special because I looked up to Kenzie when we were younger,” Auchmuty said. “We were water girls together and I always wanted to be like her. I wanted to break records like she did.”

Auchmuty hit her 10th triple with 42 seconds left in the third quarter. That number also topped Carly Thorbahn of Ottoville’s PCL record of nine in a game, set back on Jan. 30.

Columbus Grove coach Brian Schroeder said that from his perspective, King and Auchmuty’s record-setting performances came under similar circumstances.

“They both got off to a hot start and were able to keep it going,” he said. “It’s a special thing as a coach to know how much time and how much hard work both of those players put into their game. Kenzie had a great career and Lauryn is having a great career so far. Whenever one of your players gets themselves into the record books, that’s something that’s really cool to see.”

Play big, win big

DELPHOS – Delphos Jefferson girls basketball coach Denise Lindeman wanted to keep the game plan simple for Thursday’s key Northwest Conference matchup against visiting Lincolnview.

And that’s what her team did.

Delphos Jefferson fed the basketball to 6-foot-3 post player Lauren French at every opportunity they had. The result was a 32-point, 15-rebound performance from French as Delphos Jefferson rolled to a 65-40 victory over Lincolnview.

With the win, Delphos Jefferson improved to 17-3 overall and 6-1 in the NWC. Lincolnview slipped to 12-9 in all games played and 4-3 in the conference.

“I was like, ‘Let’s don’t complicate this today girls. … Get the ball to Lauren’. And Lauren delivered today,” Lindeman said with a grin. “She was a beast inside. I can’t say enough about that kid. Her drive over the last two weeks has been phenomenal. It’s just so awesome to see. … It’s her senior year. She left it out there on the court today.”

French missed a good portion of games this season, due to an injury. She said she was anxious to get back on the court.

“I definitely did not want to be out (of the lineup), but I needed it,” French said. “I was at practice every day, working to get better. As soon as the trainer gave me the OK, I was back in. It took a few days to get my feet back, but I definitely wanted to jump back in.”

Along with French’s stellar performance for Delphos Jefferson on Thursday, teammate Lyv Lindeman had 18 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

Emerson Walker paced Lincolnview on Thursday with 12 points.

Run early, run often

MILLER CITY — Miller City entered Saturday’s matchup against Wayne Trace with one main objective. That was to play at their speed.

The high-paced Wildcats forced six first-quarter turnovers and shot 5 of 7 from the field, putting the Raiders on their heels early, and using that hot start to get a 49-43 win.

Miller City, who never trailed in the game, led 12-4 three minutes into the first.

“Our goal was to get out in transition and get a quick start,” Miller City coach Ross Heuerman said. “We wanted to start that with our defense by using our pressure to force as many turnovers as we could and turn that into points. It really came down to that first couple of minutes and we were able to power through the rest of the game.”

Although Miller City scored 12 of the first 16 points, Wayne Trace cut the deficit to 19-16 after one and made it a three-point game again with 2:22 to go in the third quarter.

“We dug ourselves a hole, but we came out of that hole when we made up a lot of ground in the third quarter,” Wayne Trace coach Bethany DeJarnett said. “We just kept fighting. We got off the shots we needed to, they just didn’t fall toward the end, but I‘m proud of the way we played today.”

6’1” sophomore Lexi Moore scored a team-high 14 points for Wayne Trace. Careen Winans added 12.

Jordan Schnipke provided the offensive punch for Miller City with 17 points to lead all scorers. Schnipke made her first five shots of the second half and finished 8 of 9 from the field.

Fighting for 14 freebies

DELPHOS – All season long, opposing teams have swarmed around Delphos Jefferson senior standout Lyv Lindeman.

And all season long, Lindeman has found ways to battle through all the defensive pressure that she has faced.

In Monday’s non-league matchup against visiting Miller City, Lindeman saw her normal dose of double teams and traps.

However, the Tiffin University-bound Lindeman led Delphos Jefferson with a game-high 26 points, including 14 of 16 shooting from the free-throw line as Jefferson held off Miller City for a hard-fought 54-44 victory.

Along with Lindeman’s 26 points, teammate Lauren French (6-foot-3, senior) scored 10 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.

“Lyv had to work for her points,” Jefferson coach Denise Lindeman said. “Tonight, she put in a ton of time at the foul line. Foul shots win big games, especially when it comes to tournament time. She does put in a ton of time on the foul line. She had to earn every single point tonight.”

Jordan Schnipke paced Miller City with 13 points and four rebounds. Maddie Erford had nine points and three steals.

Distance shooting and daunting defense

HARROD — Perry experimented with a new zone defense on Saturday afternoon against Allen East, daring the Mustangs to shoot the long ball.

Challenge accepted; mission accomplished.

Allen East hit six 3-pointers in the opening quarter and used their signature tough defense to keep Perry from coming back in a 58-32 victory.

“We definitely started off super strong, but then we started to settle for threes that weren’t falling,” said Rilynn Jones, who had 10 of her game-high 28 points in the first quarter, including back-to-back 3-pointers. “Then we had to take it to the hole.”

The Mustangs hit 40% from 3-point range and 62% overall from the field in the first quarter, when they jumped out to an 18-point lead, 24-6.

To the credit of the Commodores, they didn’t relent, eventually pulling back within seven points in the third quarter. Perry scored the final nine points of the first half and the first two points in the second half to get within 31-24.

“We just put this new defense in for the beginning of the game, and we were still learning,” Perry coach Ted Patton said. “I think in the second quarter and the start of the third quarter, we got a little more aggressive with it. I think it started working for us and got us back into the game. But, being behind, it’s hard to come from behind and get a good team.”

Savana Brooks scored five of her 18 points in the third quarter, as Allen East put the game out of reach. In the fourth quarter, Jones added three of her five steals, scoring off two of them.

The Mustangs finished with eight 3-pointers in the game, led by Brooks’ four treys.

Lexenna Lee led Perry with 11 points. Lee and teammate Meme Hall each had 16 rebounds.
