For the love of baking: Miss Mel’s Bakery hosts pop-up shop in Lima’s Central District

LIMA — From the inspiration of family tradition, local baker Mel Chandler created a business using her family sugar cookie recipe. Miss Mel’s Bakery had a pop-up shop in Lima’s Central District on Friday to share with others.

“I just have so much fun with it,” Chandler said. “I do like coming up with the colors and flavors.”

Miss Mel’s Bakery began in the winter of 2020. Chandler said one family member began decorating cookies and encouraged her to give it a try.

“My sister-in-law in northern Michigan started making decorated cookies and said ‘hey, this is fun,’ ” Chandler said. “It just kind of took off from there. It was Valentine’s Day and everybody loved them. I used my great-great grandmother’s sugar cookie recipe. It’s not the thick cookie full of flour; mine are full of butter and love.”

Chandler also said she enjoys creating baked goods at home and selling products at local farmers markets.

“The best thing about going to the craft shows, farmers markets and festivals is the relationships,” Chandler said. “We build each other up and support each other. It is awesome. I could never stop doing the craft shows.” Chandler also said she has met many other small business owners at the local markets. A few of her colleagues stopped for a visit at the pop-up shop.

Miss Mel’s Bakery focuses on custom order sugar cookies, french macarons and cakes.
