MIDDLE POINT — With their two top scorers struggling from the field Allen East needed some other players to step up.
Brynn Richardson and Aubrey Young answered the call on Thursday night, drilling a couple of second-half threes during a run that separated the Mustangs (15-2) from Lincolnview (11-8) in a 44-35 win.
Young canned a triple with 11 seconds left in the third quarter, putting Allen East up 33-25. Then Richardson opened up the fourth quarter by hitting a shot from beyond the arc to make it an 11-point game. Both threes came in the midst of an 11-2 run for the Mustangs that spanned nearly seven minutes.
“We practice those shots every day,” Allen East coach Aaron Montgomery said. “They (Young and Richardson) take hundreds of shots a week from that same spot on the court. Sometimes I feel like they’re open in games and they’re a little timid to shoot, so you may not always see that from them, but they practice those shots every day.”
To that point in the game, Savana Brooks and Rilynn Jones, Allen East’s top two scorers, had combined to shoot just 6 of 19 from the floor.
“They were playing tough denial defense (on Rilynn and Savana). They played physical with us when we tried to attack and I didn’t feel like we were being strong enough with the ball. At the same time, they’re two NWC first-teamers, and I really tried to challenge them at halftime to be strong and force them to foul you.”
Brooks (11 points) and Jones (15 points) responded in the fourth quarter with seven of Allen East’s final eight points, including three trips to the free-throw line.
“We wanted to deny everywhere else when they (Brooks and Jones) didn’t have the ball in their hands,” Lincolnview coach Kyle Williams said. “We did a good job on them, but good players are good players. I thought we defended well enough to win, but Allen East is a good team. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t go your way.”
Keira Breese turned in a game-high 17 points for Lincolnview.
Jefferson gets back on track
LEIPSIC – After two consecutive tough losses, Delphos Jefferson coach Denise Lindeman was looking for her squad to get back on track.
On Thursday night at Leipsic, Delphos Jefferson did just that as it rolled to a convincing 60-37 victory over Leipsic in a Northwest Conference matchup.
The game was knotted 5-5, early on.
However, Jefferson quickly responded with a 12-3 run to close out the first quarter and never looked back.
With the win, Delphos Jefferson improved to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the Northwest Conference. Leipsic fell to 7-9 in all games played, and 1-6 in the NWC.
“It was a great team win,” Lindeman said. “I thought the girls executed much better at the offensive end. (At the) defensive end, I thought our defense was a lot better than previously – Saturday against Ottoville (44-38 loss).”
Lyv Lindeman led Jefferson and all scorers on Thursday with 18 points. Lindeman, who will be playing basketball at Tiffin University next school year, also dished out seven assists and pulled down four rebounds. Lauren French, a 6-foot-3 senior post player had 13 points, 12 rebounds, and one block.
Jazelle Perez paced Leipsic with 16 points, six boards, and one block.
Short-handed Shawnee stumbles
CONVOY — With Grace Freiberger and Sydney Burris sporting crutches on the bench, Shawnee struggled to make anything happen on offense during a 62-22 loss to fourth-ranked Crestview on Tuesday night.
Frieberger missed her first game after tweaking a knee last Saturday against St. Marys and she’s considered to be out indefinitely pending an evaluation of the injury.
Without their all-time leading scorer, Shawnee (7-9) shot just 8 of 34 from the field and turned the ball over 16 times.
Crestview (16-2) entered the game on the heels of a Thursday night win over Delphos Jefferson, one that put them back in the mix for the NWC title.
Crestview coach Mark Gregory said that the main focus for his team since the win over Jefferson has been to avoid any type of let-down loss this week.
“That’s something that we’ve talked about (since Thursday) and it’s one thing to talk about, but it’s another to do it,” he said. “We had some struggles making some shots early in the first quarter, but we tried to focus on our effort and energy. In the third quarter, I thought we did just about everything well.”
The Knights removed all doubt from the outcome of Tuesday night’s matchup with a 27-0 run to start the second half, holding Shawnee scoreless until the 2:56 mark of the fourth quarter.
Cali Gregory led all scorers with 25 points on the evening.
Shawnee got a team-high eight points from Alexis Whetstone.
Ottoville stays sharp
OTTOVILLE — Last week Ottoville suffered a non-league loss to state-ranked Ottawa-Glandorf.
That, along with Saturday’s matchup against Delphos Jefferson, were two of what Ottoville coach Vaughn Horstman calls his team’s “power five” games on the schedule.
On Saturday afternoon at L.W Heckman Gymnasium, Ottoville got a 44-38 win over one of its toughest non-league opponents, handing Jefferson its second-straight loss following a 14-1 start.
“It’s a coaching game where you have to adjust on the fly in ones like this,” Horstman said. “We have another one of these left against Liberty-Benton at the end of the season right before the tournament, and that’s not going to be an easy one either. We play the best of the best in the area every year, and that gets us ready for tournament time.”
Carly Thorbahn paced Ottoville with 11 points, followed by Paige Turnwald’s 10, and Isabelle Furley at nine. Furley and Thorbahn combined for six of their team’s eight 3-point field goals.
Lyv Lindeman, who finished the game with 20 points, scored 10 of those in the second quarter to give her team a 25-19 lead at the break, but Ottoville switched up its defensive game plan at the half and held the visitors to just 5 of 21 from the field the rest of the way.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well. It’s as simple as that,” said Delphos Jefferson coach Denise Lindeman. “We couldn’t shoot, and we had too many turnovers. Ottoville played a good game today.”
TCC steals win from O-G
OTTAWA — Ottawa-Glandorf had the ball in the hands of the right player and plenty of momentum at the end of Saturday’s game.
But Toledo Central Catholic had Brooklyn Vaughn.
As the Titans’ Karsyn Erford, who’d already scored 20 points in the game, went to make a move at the basket for what would’ve been the winning bucket, Vaughn tapped the ball away and ran upcourt in the closing seconds of TCC’s 56-55 upset victory at Ottawa’s Supreme Court.
“Obviously we wanted to try to get Karsyn to the rim. No. 44 (Vaughn) did a great job,” said Ottawa-Glandorf coach Troy Yant, whose team entered the game ranked No. 2 in the state in Division III. “… She’d been pretty good at getting to the rim all game.”
Vaughn, a 6-foot forward who’s committed to play Division I basketball at Loyola Chicago next year, had also been pretty good all game for the Irish (10-5). She had a double-double with 10 rebounds and 16 points, along with three steals.
“Brooklyn doesn’t surprise me on anything she does,” TCC acting head coach Terry Murnen said. “She’s such a competitor. She wants her teammates to play as hard as she does. She’ll come up with a play, somehow, someway.”
Katie Kaufman scored nine of her 20 points in the fourth quarter. She also finished with nine rebounds and three blocks for the Titans.
Big scorers
Several area girls basketball players topped the 15-point plateau in recent games:
• Khaliah Luster’s monster 32-point performance carried Perry to an 11-point win over Waynesfield-Goshen.
• Tatelyn Faraglia of Waynesfield-Goshen, a mainstay on this list, scored 28 points against Vanlue. She added 21 points in a loss to Arlington and 20 points in a loss to Perry.
• Carly Thorbahn made a school-record nine threes, finishing with 27 points in Ottoville’s runaway victory over Elida
• Ava Huffman scored a game-high 27 points, leading Pandora-Gilboa to a win over Cardinal Stritch. She also scored 16 points against Liberty Benton.
• Olivia Burkhart of Ada scored a game-high 25 points in a narrow victory over Upper Scioto Valley.
• Clara Goecke of Spencerville set a new career high of 24 points against Bluffton. She also scored 17 points in a loss to Coldwater.
• Lauryn Auchmuty of Columbus Grove dropped 23 points in a win over McComb.
• Kelsie Carlson of Bath outscored LCC all by herself with 21 points in a 52-15 win.
• Emma Will of Delphos St. John’s scored 20 points in a loss to Lincolnview.
• Maggie Pothast of Fort Jennings contributed 20 of her team’s 29 points in a loss to Ayersville.
• Raegan Hutchison of Waynesfield-Goshen had 20 points in a loss to Arlington. She added 18 points in a win over Vanlue.
