Business leaders talk mental health

LIMA — Local business leaders in the area met Thursday morning to discuss mental health. Cornerstone of Hope Executive Director Kari Taylor spoke to leaders about a healthy thought life.

“There are numerous studies that have tried to capture how many thoughts we actually have in a day,” Taylor said. “It is between 6,000 and 50,000 thoughts per day. What the research did agree is that regardless of the thoughts 80% of them were negative and 95% of them were repetitive.”

The goal of the message was to help the business leaders train their brains. A recent press release said the overall goal of the ‘Women in Business’ luncheons is to empower women who play a part in business.

”Until we become aware of what we are thinking and what is happening in our minds, we cannot change it,” Taylor said. “It is critical we become aware. When you start to say, ‘What is going on in my internal dialogue,’ it will help you immensely.”

The business leaders also provided tables with resources related to their individual companies. The local leaders were able to network and fellowship. Taylor also said leaders should remember they are in charge of their minds.

“We often do not realize that we are in charge of our thinking,” Taylor said. “We have a say in what thoughts we agree with and which ones we disagree with. What stories do you fuel your negative thoughts with and how much time do you spend on a negative thought?”

Taylor also said at Cornerstone of Hope, the organization utilizes this practice with their clients and coworkers.

“We do love talking about brains at Cornerstone,” Taylor said. “We call it an out-of-brain experience. We say I am having this thought then ask questions like trap did I fall into or what triggered this?”

Taylor also said anyone can create new pathways for their thoughts and get any help necessary to become a great leader.

The luncheons are held several times throughout the year. According to a recent press release, the next dates of the luncheon will be April 11, Sept. 5 and Dec. 12.
