Boys basketball notebook: Toumazos sends O-G past Lima Senior

OTTAWA — With the game on the line Saturday night, the Titans had the ball in the hands of their star 6-foot-6 guard, Ohio State-bound Colin White. Up by just one point with 1:32 remaining, everyone knew that White, who had a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds, was going to shoot — until he didn’t.

White kicked the ball out to junior point guard Grady Toumazos, who hit a 3-pointer to put No. 2-ranked Ottawa-Glandorf (12-2) ahead for good and seal a 51-48 victory in front of a packed house at the Supreme Court in Ottawa.

Toumazos, who finished with 12 points, said, “When it feels good, you have to let it fly. That last three really felt good.”

Toumazos added, “Me and Whitey, we put countless hours in during the offseason. We built that chemistry there.”

The Spartans (6-6) had one more opportunity for a game-tying 3-pointer. Shawn Foster, who had six of his 10 points in the fourth quarter, found himself tied up by White and Erford near halfcourt and had to unsuccessfully chuck the ball toward the basket.

Lima Senior coach Quincey Simpson said the Spartans missed their opportunity, but he couldn’t stop the clock to calm his players, as he’d used all his timeouts.

“You always save one time out, just in case,” Simpson said. “I didn’t have a time out left, so that’s just poor management by me. I thought we had a couple of good looks before that.”

Isiah Wilson led Lima Senior with 16 points. Dashad Greer had a team-high six rebounds, all offensive boards.

Jays guards reign supreme

PANDORA – The way Delphos St. John’s boys basketball team is built, with four guards in its starting lineup and more off the bench, once they get a lead it’s not easy to take it away from them.

That was demonstrated again when the Blue Jays beat Pandora-Gilboa 57-48 on Saturday night.

Cameron Elwer scored 34 points to lead St. John’s (11-2) and Andrew Elwer had nine points. Aidan Morris’ 17 points led Pandora-Gilboa (11-2) and Colin Harris scored 10 points.

“We really like our guard play. We have big guards, we have skilled guards who have played a lot of basketball,” St. John’s coach Aaron Elwer said.

“You talk about tournament basketball and what do you like and a lot of people say, ‘We like having good point guards and guards.’ We’re built for that. They (Pandora-Gilboa) are a really good basketball team. It was a tough physical game. We handled the situation again. We’re growing up,” he said.

Pandora-Gilboa coach Mike Lee said there is no doubt about St. John’s ability to protect a lead.

“And when you’ve got the main cog who is running the show (Cameron Elwer) the ball is going to be in his hands 75 to 80 percent of the time and that just puts a lot more pressure on your defense. He’s one tough character,” he said.

Big Green put together big fourth-quarter

OTTOVILLE — The game was there for either Ottoville or Miller City to control. It was just a question of who could find some offense to go with the stifling defenses that had set the agenda for the first three quarters.

Those answers and the game belonged to Ottoville when it outscored the Wildcats 20-3 in the last six minutes of the game for a 48-38 boys basketball win at the L.W. Heckman Gymnasium on Friday night.

Michael Turnwald scored 15 points, eight of them in the fourth quarter, to lead Ottoville (11-3) and Landon Horstman had 12 points. Silas Niese’s 12 points led Miller City (9-4).

“Miller City wants to play fast. We want to play fast. We were playing fast but there just weren’t a lot of things going well (offensively) for either one of us early. We thought that pace we could play at could be a determining factor and maybe it was a little bit toward the end,” Ottoville coach Keith Utendorf said.

Miller City led by as many as five points during the third quarter but Keaton Schnipke’s 3-pointer just before the buzzer put the game into a 28-28 tie heading into the fourth quarter.

The Wildcats built an even bigger lead when a bucket by Andon Ruhe put them up 35-28 with 6:25 left in the game. But the Big Green put 15 unanswered points on the scoreboard and Miller City never got closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Bearcats upset No. 3 LCC

SPENCERVILLE — Following Sunday’s loss to Delphos St John’s, No. 3 LCC looked to get back on track during its trip to the “Walk-In Closet,” but the Bearcats had a different idea. Spencerville’s big first half fueled their 54-52 non-conference victory.

“It always feels good to win, especially against a really good team,” said Spencerville coach Kevin Sensabaugh. “In the first half, we were outstanding defensively and played well in the second half, but they made some tough shots. We handled the ball late, and they had to come get us.”

Spencerville led by as many as 15 points in the game. The Bearcats held a 50-40 edge with 4:47 remaining in the fourth quarter before the Thunderbirds came roaring back. Carson Parker hit a 3-pointer with 8.5 seconds remaining to pull LCC within 53-52.

Evan Osting, who scored 11 points for the Bearcats, hit one of his two free-throw attempts for the final score. LCC called a timeout with 4.1 seconds to go to set up a play, but Parker’s 3-point try missed as time expired.

Grady Smith led the Bearcats (9-3) with 13 points, with 10 of those by halftime. Carter Sudhoff had 10 for Spencerville.

Carson Parker and Jordan Priddy each scored 24 points for the Thunderbirds (11-2).

Glick comes through in the clutch

WAYNESFIELD – In Friday’s Northwest Central Conference game against visiting Cory-Rawson, Waynesfield-Goshen displayed improvement, especially on how it can finish a contest.

Waynesfield-Goshen (3-7) trailed Cory-Rawson (3-8) 33-31 with 1:15 left to play. That was when Levi Glick nailed his first 3-pointer of the contest to give the Tigers a 34-33 lead.

Then, in the final seconds of the contest with Cory-Rawson leading 36-35, Glick canned his second 3-pointer of the night to give Waynesfield-Goshen a thrilling 38-36 victory over Cory-Rawson.

“Levi Glick came up big at the end for us,” said Clum, the former Allen East boys basketball coach. “He wants the ball in his hands. That’s what we talked about in the timeout (with 16 seconds left to play). We said, ‘Let’s get the last shot here. Get it in Levi’s hands, and let him create something. He can get a shot off, or he can kick it out to somebody.’ We knew as soon as he (Glick) caught it, that it was going up.

Glick scored 11 points, including the two clutch 3-pointers for the Tigers. Landin DeWitt led Waynesfield-Goshen with 12 points, including three 3-pointers. DeWitt pulled down eight boards and dished out five assists.

Preston Stumpp led Cory-Rawson and all scorers with 17 points, including a 3-pointer. Stumpp came away with eight rebounds and had one block. Wilson Garmatter had 11 points, eight rebounds, three steals, three assists and one block for the Hornets.
