Girls basketball notebook: Third-quarter magic for O-G

OTTAWA — It took a little longer for Ottawa-Glandorf’s game plan to take effect in Thursday night’s win against Bath in a matchup of the two top teams in the Western Buckeye League standings.

O-G (14-1, 5-0 WBL) was behind 23-22 to visiting Bath (9-4, 4-1 WBL) at halftime before a dominant third quarter turned the game completely in its direction.

The Titans, ranked No. 2 in this week’s state Division III poll, outscored Bath 22-8 in the third quarter to take a 44-31 lead into the final quarter. They were a different team defensively and offensively after halftime.

“We basically did in the third quarter what I’d hoped we would do in the first quarter,” Ottawa-Glandorf coach Troy Yant said.

“There was a lot of energy in the first quarter, but there was a lot of wasted energy. We had a lot of empty trips up and down the floor. It was a game where we really needed to challenge them at halftime, and I thought they responded well in the second half,” he said.

Karsyn Erford scored 17 points to lead four O-G players in double figures. Carlie Brinkman had 11 points, and Myka Aldrich and Kaitlyn Kimmet scored 10 points.

“We knew going into the game this was one of the biggest games for the WBL,” said Erford, who also scored 15 points in the Titans’ 32-25 win against Smithville on Sunday in the Classic in the Country Challenge tournament at Berlin Hiland High School. “”We were both undefeated (in league games), and one of us was going to come out on top. We worked really hard to get that job done because we want that title for the WBL.”

Anne Oliver’s 17 points led Bath, and Izzy McDermott got 11 points.

Finding their roles

One of Shawnee coach Rachel Rumbaugh’s goals was to get her young players more involved in the offensive production.

Senior Grace Freiberger has been the main scorer for Shawnee throughout her high school career.

In Thursday’s Western Buckeye League girls basketball matchup between Shawnee and Wapakoneta at Lappin Gymnasium, Freiberger stepped up once again as the leading scorer for the Indians as she tossed in a game-high 24 points.

However, six other Shawnee players made contributions at the offensive end on Thursday night, as Shawnee pulled away early en route to a convincing 50-27 victory over Wapakoneta.

Kamryn Morris and Morgan Betts chipped in seven points each for Shawnee. Betts had five steals and two assists. Morris came away with three steals.

“We talk about everybody chipping in, and every girl chipped in on the scoreboard and on the defensive end,” Rumbaugh said. “So, we’re happy at the way the girls played tonight.

“We had several girls step up and hit shots. Kam (Kamryn Morris) hit one (3-pointer). Heaven (Watkins) hit one (3-pointer). We had a lot of different girls help out on the scoreboard tonight, which was the difference for our young team.”

Building something

It’s been a work in progress for Bluffton girls basketball coach Adam Burris in his first year, as he only had one varsity player — 6-foot-2 post Ayla Grandey — back from last season.

More of the Pirates stepped up Tuesday in the Pirates’ 49-37 win against Elida.

“Ayla is our only varsity player back (from last year),” Burris said. “So, we are young and inexperienced. We had four starters graduate. There’s been a learning curve, but they have responded well.”

Along with Grandey’s solid performance on Tuesday, Macy Schaadt scored 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Schaadt also had three boards and three steals. Blair Utendorf added eight points and five rebounds for the Pirates.

“I felt like we held our own (inside the paint),” Burris said. “It makes things a little easier when you have 6-2 (Grandey) in the middle. Even our guards were battling down in the post. I was happy. “

Grandey added 11 points and six rebounds in Bluffton’s 51-38 loss to Leipsic on Thursday.

Earning that first PCL win

Both Pandora-Gilboa and Fort Jennings looked for their first Putnam County League victory on Saturday afternoon. The Rockets cashed in at the free-throw line, especially in the fourth quarter, to pick up a 55-49 victory.

“It feels good,” P-G coach Cody Pelton said. “Every team in the PCL is competitive. They all play hard, and they’re tough to beat. So, every one of them (PCL victories) feels good.”

For the game, P-G was 22 of 31 shooting from the charity stripe for 71 percent.

P-G sophomore Ava Huffman was 14 of 17 from the free-throw line on Saturday.

“She (Huffman) is a terrific free-throw shooter,” Pelton said. “She’s very good (going) downhill and getting to the free-throw line.
