Girls basketball notebook: Auchmuty scores 1,000th career point

COLUMBUS GROVE — One girl in Columbus Grove’s history had reached 1,000 career points as a junior before Thursday night.

In a 58-36 win over Leipsic, Lauryn Auchmuty made it two, joining Jade Clement in the record books.

Coincidentally the two are cousins, but Auchmuty earned bragging rights by accomplishing the feat in fewer games.

“Walking through the halls every day and seeing the 1,000-point record board, one of them being my cousin (Clement), I always wanted to be like her and score 1,000 as a junior,” Auchmuty said. “It means a lot to me personally.”

Auchmuty entered the night needing 12 points to cross the plateau. With 57.6 seconds left in the third quarter, she drew a foul and earned the record at the line.

“I felt the pressure when I first stepped up to the line, but I stepped back and took some deep breaths,” Auchmuty said of the moment. “I was really hoping my first shot went in so that the pressure of the moment was gone. It was great to get it out of the way because it’s been on my mind the past few games.”

It was an uplifting scene in a crowded gymnasium for Columbus Grove, a community that’s endured some tough times with a student’s death in the past week.

“It was a nice positive moment for us,” Columbus Grove coach Brian Schroeder said. “Obviously our hearts are still heavy with the loss in our community. It’s been a tough week for our students, teachers, administration and the community. Our hearts go out to the families for what they’ve had to go through.”

Auchmuty finished the night with 16 points. Leipsic’s Jazelle Perez topped all scorers with 18 points.

Back and forth battle

SPENCERVILLE – Spencerville led with a minute and a half to play but Lincolnview finished strong to take a 48-44 girls basketball win on Thursday night.

Kassidy Hammons scored 12 points, Addysen Steven got 11 points and Emerson Walker had 10 points for the Lancers (7-5, 3-0 Northwest Conference). Heidi Keller’s 14 points led Spencerville (6-6, 1-3 NWC).

Walker’s hoop and free throw gave Lincolnview the lead for good after Clara Goecke had scored with 1:36 to play to give Spencerville its last lead.

Lincolnview led 26-22 at halftime with Hammons leading the way with 10 points in the half. It held Keller scoreless in the first two quarters. She got all 14 of her points in the second half.

Lincolnview led 36-33 after three quarters.

“Spencerville is a young team and they get after it, they did a good job of switching up defensively.” Lincolnview head coach Kyle Williams said. “We reacted well and knocked down free throws when we needed to.

“It felt great to get a win over a top program tonight,” Williams said. “Greg (Ekis) does a great job and we are doing a great job building as well. It feels good to get a win tonight.”

Lincolnview’s win was its first against Spencerville since the 2016-17 season, according to MaxPreps.

Shooting beats size

OTTOVILLE — Bath has size, and Ottoville has shooters.

The Wildkittens, who start three players that stand 5-foot-10 or taller, dominated the paint early on, but Ottoville’s shooters got hot in the second quarter Tuesday, hit a total of 11 threes on the night, and pulled away for a 49-38 win.

“If you shoot the ball like they (Ottoville) did tonight, that’s a hard thing to overcome,” said Bath coach Greg Mauk. “They were 48% from the 3-point line on 23 attempts. Some of the shots were contested, but a lot of them weren’t and that’s on us.”

Carly and Erica Thorbahn combined for four triples in the second quarter, turning what was once a 15-9 deficit into a 21-19 lead at the half.

The second half was no different.

Carly Thorbahn, Isabelle Furley, and Brooklyn Koester all hit shots from deep.

Ottoville went on a 14-0 run that spanned over seven minutes starting at the end of the third quarter and lasting through the middle of the fourth quarter.

Battling back

COLUMBUS GROVE — Coaches learn a lot about their team by seeing how they face a deficit.

Ottoville girls basketball coach Vaughn Horstman learned that his team had the mettle to battle back from an 11-point deficit in the first quarter to beat Columbus Grove 50-43 on Saturday afternoon in a showdown of two of the Putnam County League’s top teams.

Horstman and the Big Green had just witnessed a shooting clinic put on by Columbus Grove’s Lauryn Auchmuty, who scored 14 of her 26 points in the first quarter and hit four 3-pointers in those same eight minutes to lift her team to a 21-10 lead.

That could have been the end for the Big Green (9-3, 2-1 PCL), who were still reeling from their Thursday night loss to Kalida. Ottoville responded with a 25-2 run.

“We played with a lot of heart in that second quarter,” Horstman said. “I mean, it’s what we’ve been looking for all year. It was a question if we could maintain that energy.”

Ottoville’s Erica Thorbahn scored 10 points to turn the tables, ending the 5-foot-5 junior guard’s admitted scoring slump against some tight defense by the Bulldogs. She finished the game with 12 points.
