Smoke detector awakens Perry Township residents, who escape fire

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Two Perry Township residents were awakened by a smoke detector in their home and fled unscathed after a fire broke out in their home Wednesday morning.

Perry Township Fire Chief Kevin Rader said crews were dispatched at 7:22 a.m. to a home at 210 Amherst Road in response to a residential fire. Upon their arrival firefighters observed heavy smoke coming from the basement area of the dwelling and an attached car port.

Rader said two residents inside the home were alerted by the smoke detector and were met by heavy smoke upon opening a door to the basement. They called 911 and fled the home.

Rader said the origin of the fire remains undetermined and is under investigation. The residence suffered heavy smoke damage, the chief said, but a more precise damage estimate was not yet available. The home is owned by Arlene Packard.

Assisting at the scene were fire departments from Cridersville, Uniopolis and Shawnee Township.
