Boys basketball roundup: Elwer’s eight 3-pointer night carries Delphos St. John’s

BOYS BASKETBALL

Delphos St. John’s 70, New Knoxville 33

DELPHOS — Freshman Andrew Elwer hit eight 3-pointers, including five in a remarkable first quarter, as Delphos St. John’s cruised past New Knoxville. He tied the school record with eight 3-pointers.

The Blue Jays (3-1, 1-0 Midwest Athletic Conference) jumped out to a 26-7 lead in the first quarter and never relented. Sophomore Cameron Elwer added 20 points in the win.

New Knoxville (2-3, 0-1 MAC) turned to Troy Dwenger for 12 points.

Elida 59, Kenton 49

KENTON — Elida rallied from a seven-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to win its Western Buckeye League opener.

Jackson Covault scored 11 of his team-high 16 points in the second half for Elida (4-1, 1-0 WBL). A’mari Wash added 15 points.

Kenton (2-3, 0-1 WBL) received 12 points each from Blaine Bushong, Ethan Yoder and Steven Piper.

Shawnee 70, Bath 46

SHAWNEE TOWNSHIP — Beckett Bertke tallied 30 points, including 17 of his team’s 21 points in a 21-12 third-quarter run, as the Indians won their Western Buckeye League opener at home.

Nick Pasion added 12 points for Shawnee (3-2, 1-0 WBL). Bertke also had nine rebounds, while Pasion had six rebounds.

Bath’s Jaxon Foster had a team-high 19 points for the Wildcats (0-4, 0-1 WBL), and Zavier Tickle scored 11.

Bluffton 76, Delphos Jefferson 58

DELPHOS — Bluffton had five players score in double figures, and the Pirates used a 24-15 scoring run in the second quarter to pull away thanks in part to Marek Donaldson’s four 3-pointers in the eight-minute period.

Donaldson and Blake Sommers led the way with 17 points each for the Pirates (3-1, 1-0 Northwest Conference). Wade Ginther added 16 points, while Terron Boblitt and Brody Sommers each had 11.

Jefferson (1-3, 0-1 NWC) received a 30-point night from Karder Agner, including 12 of his team’s 14 first-quarter points. Isaac Gallmeier scored an additional 11 points.

Columbus Grove 53, Ada 31

ADA — Columbus Grove opened up its football playoffs-delayed boys basketball season with a solid win at Ada, leading by 14 by halftime in a battle of the Bulldogs.

Landon Best and Bo Birnesser each scored 14 points for Columbus Grove (1-0, 1-0 Northwestern Conference). Zach Reynolds added 11, as Grove gave first-year coach Connor Kohls his first career victory.

Carson Conley led Ada (0-4, 0-1 NWC) with 11 points.

Holgate 42, Kalida 26

KALIDA — Holgate used a 14-2 run in the second quarter to rally back from a four-point deficit and win at Kalida.

H Hartman paced Holgate (1-3) with 10 points.

Jacob Siebeneck led Kalida (0-5) with 10 points, including two 3-pointers in the first quarter.

Fairview 46, Continental 40

CONTINENTAL — Fairview held Continental scoreless in the second quarter on its way to a narrow victory on the road.

Kale Salyers and Jude Shininger each scored 13 points for the Apaches (2-2).

Continental (0-5) looked to Mason Rayle for a team-high 10 points.

Lima Senior 92, Woodward 38

TOLEDO — Lima Senior collected a dominating victory on the road.

The Spartans (2-2, 2-1 Toledo City Athletic League) started with a frantic pace, leading 40-12 after the first quarter. They held a 42-point led going into the half.

Woodward is now 2-3, 0-1 in the league.

Perry 44, Temple Christian 36

PERRY TOWNSHIP — Zomere Daniel scored eight of his 16 points during a 17-10 third-quarter run to lead the Commodores.

Marcus Hill added 12 points for Perry (2-2, 1-0 Northwest Central Conference).

Derek Shultz paced Temple Christian (3-1, 0-1 NWCC) with 13 points. Dawson Clay added 11.

Upper Scioto Valley at Waynesfield-Goshen

WAYNESFIELD — Upper Scioto Valley (2-3, 1-0 NWCC) snuck out of Waynesfield-Goshen (0-4, 0-1 NWCC) with a one-point win.

Miller City 59, Patrick Henry 46

MILLER CITY — Miller City improved to 3-1 with the victory.
