Students give back for the holiday season

LIMA — Students of Heir Force Community School made a generous contribution to the local organization Neighborhood Relief Thrift Store. The school collected over 5,000 canned goods and non-perishable food items to give back. According to Executive Director Willie Heggins, the classes enjoy bringing in the food items and learning about the true meaning of community.

“We are pretty intentional about not only the academic development but also helping young people understand the importance of being community stewards,” Heggins said. “This is an annual thing that we do every year around this time. It has been amazing over the years how the students and family members come together for one purpose.”

Heggins also said the annual donation goes to various organizations in the city. This year, the school chose Neighborhood Relief because of its mission: to help people in times of need.

“The students every year get excited about this,” Heggins said. “Over the last seven years, we probably had donated over 75,000 cans and nonperishable items. I could not be more proud of my kids, staff and my team for the contributions we try to make this time of the year.”

According to Neighborhood Relief Owner Pastor David Roznowski, the donations will be stored and distributed over the next few months at parks and in the thrift store parking lot.

“The kids have done a phenomenal job again this year,” Roznowski said. “It just blows me away every year. We are going to get this out to the community. We have seen the need has gone up. This is going to help a lot of families.”
