Boys basketball notebook: Bertke’s big night, St. John’s wins in OT, LCC finds tempo, Spencerville wins

Shawnee’s Beckett Bertke had the kind of game most players just dream about Saturday night.

The 6-foot-5 sophomore scored 39 points and nabbed 11 rebounds, as the Indians beat St. Henry in a 79-68 overtime game.

Shawnee (2-2) had trailed by nine points at the half. A 23-16 run in the third quarter pulled them closer.

Once the game got into OT, it was all Shawnee, though, as the Indians held a 15-4 edge in the extra session.

Working overtime

Delphos St. John’s survived an overtime thriller against Kalida on Friday night. Neither team led by more than six points in the game.

Cameron Elwer scored 26 points and Aaron Moenter had 12 points, hitting two huge shots late in the fourth quarter and making the go-ahead shot in overtime for the Blue Jays.

“That’s what he does. He’s just a gamer,” Cameron Elwer said about Aaron Moenter, a three-year varsity player. “They fought us tooth and nail, and that’s what we want. It’s our first road game, and we made the plays.”

Aaron Moenter said, “It was just a momentum game. We got it back in overtime, and we stuck to it.”

The Blue Jays lost their Saturday night game to Elida.

Braylon Smith’s 13 points led Kalida (0-2). Logan Kerner scored 12 points, and Jackson Schroeder had 10 points.

Finding the tempo

Lima Central Catholic boys basketball coach Sean Powell wanted his team to push the tempo.

In Friday’s matchup with Allen East, the Thunderbirds got behind 7-2 before closing out the quarter on a 13-0 run on their way to a 53-37 victory.

“Our goal is to get up and down (the court) and create shots,” Powell said. “We want to create numbers. We’re not the best at it right now. … It’s something that we are working on.”

Jordan Priddy led LCC and all scorers Friday night with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. Billy Bourk (6-foot-6, forward) had 10 rebounds and two blocks for the T-Birds.

Ethan Young led Allen East on Friday with 12 points, on four 3-pointers. Young also came away with nine boards.

Back to winning

Spencerville bounced back from an 0-2 start to the season with a 72-39 win against Fort Jennings on Saturday night. The Bearcats are now 1-2.

Carder Orr (15 points, 6 rebounds), Evan Osting (15 points), Carder Sudhoff (14 points, 8 rebounds) and freshman Will Sensabaugh (12 points) led Spencerville.

“It was big. We’re going to build off this and have a good season,” said Sudhoff, a 6-foot-6 center.

Orr said, “It’s a very crucial confidence builder for us. It helps us get momentum and move forward because those two losses were rough.”

Jarron Swick, with 13 points, was the leading scorer for Fort Jennings (2-2).
