Girls basketball notebook: Shawnee’s fast start; defense carries Perry; Auchmuty lifts CG

Shawnee started its game against Elida with a 20-5 run in the first 5 1/2 minutes on its way to a 60-46 win in girls basketball on Thursday night.

Grace Freiberger scored 26 points, while Alexis Whetstone added a season-high 15 points. Freiberger had also scored 26 points in the Indians’ 70-40 win against Waynesfield-Goshen on Tuesday night, including 16 in the midst of a 21-8 second-quarter run.

“We’ve been in a bit of a (shooting) slump lately, so that was good for us,” Shawnee coach Rachel Rumbaugh said after the Elida game.

Defensive dominance

Perry (2-2, 1-0 in the Northwest Central Conference) forced 28 turnovers against Ridgemont on its way to a 48-27 girls basketball victory Thursday night.

“We played hard for most of the game. But we came out, I think, a little soft in the first quarter, but we picked it up as the game went on and created some turnovers,” Perry coach Ted Patton said after the game.

“I think that is our strength this year – playing good defense, getting them to turn the ball over and then running the floor. I think we do a good job with that.”

Last-minute heroics

Columbus Grove’s Lauryn Auchmuty hit the game-winning basket with five seconds remaining in overtime to lead Columbus Grove to a 53-51 OT victory at Allen East in girls basketball.

Auchmuty led her team with 22 points, including three 3-pointers for the Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0 NWC). Allen East countered with Rilynn Jones’ 18 points and Savana Brooks’ 17.

Auchmuty also scored 17 points in Columbus Grove’s 58-4 win against Continental. She hit four 3-pointers in that game.

Sharing the load

Ottoville had four players score in double-digits in its 76-39 win against Fort Jennings on Tuesday night in a battle of Putnam County League girls basketball foes separated by about three miles.

Carly Thorbahn (17), Isabell Furley (17), Brooklyn Koester (14) and Eric Thorbahn (13) each topped 10 points in the victory for the Big Green, who are off to a 4-1 start this year.

“That is always our goal, to start out strong,” Furley said after the game. “If you don’t, there is no stopping. It is a team game, we have to keep moving the ball. If you don’t do that, you aren’t going to get the open shots.”
