Rural Bluffton man sentenced for injuries he caused in bar altercation

OTTAWA — A Putnam County man was sentenced Monday to five years on probation and a 60-day jail sentence for his role in an altercation outside a Columbus Grove bar that resulted in a woman suffering a broken wrist.

Derek Butcher, 40, of rural Bluffton, was indicted by a grand jury in May on a second-degree felony count of felonious assault in connection with the incident. He pleaded no contest on Sept. 11 to attempted felonious assault as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Putnam County Common Pleas Court Judge Keith Schierloh sentenced Butcher to five years on probation and ordered him to report to the Putnam County jail on Nov. 4 to begin serving his 60-day sentence. Butcher was granted work release privileges and must submit to random urinalysis.

He was ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $2,842 to victim in the case.

According to court documents the charges against Butcher stem from an incident outside Miller’s Bar in Columbus Grove on May 14 during which he is alleged to have caused serious physical harm to Alanah Baca by pushing her down, causing her to fracture her wrist.

According to a report from the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy on patrol in Columbus Grove heard yelling from in front of the bar and stopped to investigate. He was told that Robert “Bobby” Smith had yelled at Butcher and “took him to the ground” after Butcher allegedly had shoved Baca, Smith’s girlfriend, causing her to fall and break her wrist.

Smith was charged with underage consumption.
