Heir Force students raise money for wildfire relief, meet with local student from Maui

LIMA — The Heir Force Builders Club spoke with ONU student Abi Akamine Wednesday about their recent fundraiser to provide relief to victims of the wildfire that took place in her hometown of Laihana on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Dr. Willie Heggins, Executive Director of the school, said that for the students to pick a cause that turned out to be affecting someone local was even bigger than it could have been.

“She was actually in Hawaii in August when these horrific tragedies took place,” he said. “It just helps them understand that when we talk about neighbors, we really are that close. This young lady is from Maui and is playing basketball at a university just 15 miles east of us.”

Heir Force students said it was rewarding to talk with Akamine on a video chat organized by Heggins.

“Talking to Abi was great because we got firsthand experience about what she is going through, how her family was affected and how she had to come back,” Layo Awe said. “Her story was very interesting and enlightening because the wildfires have been heartbreaking and to get a firsthand account of what happened is eye-opening.”

Akimane told the students that she was afraid of the uncertainty brought about by the disaster, which has killed a reported 98 people.

“It was really scary not knowing what was going to happen,” she said. “But I’m really thankful to still have my family. And having folks out here in Ohio helping my community really fills my heart.

She added that the financial support from fundraisers like the Builders Club’s penny drive, which has raised over $500 in donations from students since beginning Sept. 18, are ideal.

“I think that’s the best thing right now since we are coming from so far away,” she said. “I know that people at home, including my family and friends are concerned right now with replacing things like clothes and furniture. But all efforts are appreciated.”

Builders Club Advisor Teresa Hollar said that she was proud of the students for answering the call.

“It really makes me proud,” she said. “So many kids nowadays have the mentality that things are owed to them and they’re so me-focused. To see them going out of their way with some of the ideas that they come up with throughout the year makes me so proud to see.”

All funds raised by the fundraiser went toward the Hawaii Maui Strong Fund. For more information or to donate, visit the Hawai’i Community Foundation website.
