High school football: Lima Senior rolls past Woodward

LIMA — Toledo Woodward finally recorded its first points of the season in Friday’s Toledo City League football matchup with Lima Senior at Spartan Stadium.

Unfortunately for Toledo Woodward, its celebration got lost in the 56-6 shellacking that Lima Senior put on the Polar Bears.

Lima Senior got out to the early lead and never looked back, en route to the convincing win on homecoming night.

With the victory, Lima Senior improves to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Toledo City League. Woodward falls to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in league play.

The Spartans’ offensive unit rolled up 364 yards on the night.

Lima Senior sophomore quarterback Ja’niaus Hall was 13 of 16 passing for 247 yards with six touchdown passes and had one interception.

Zaveon Garner was Hall’s favorite target Friday night, hauling in three passes for 116 yards with TD catches of 24 and 89 yards.

Chance Sanders caught five passes from Hall for 85 yards and had TD receptions of 28 and 3 yards for the Spartans. Teammate Sumarion Doughty had three catches for 54 yards with two TDs.

Hall also rushed for 10 yards on four carries.

The Spartans also scored on a 62-yard punt return by Boog Wilson, in the first quarter.

Lima Senior did score two rushing TDs against Woodward. Kahliq Wash had TD scampers of 5 and 16 yards.

It took a little while for the Lima Senior offensive unit to click on Friday.

However, by the end of the first quarter, the Spartans led 18-0. Lima Senior’s lead ballooned to 42-6 by the halftime break.

“We definitely weren’t as sharp as we wanted to be (early on),” Lima Senior head coach Bill Lawrence said. “But give that to all the excitement and (homecoming) festivities that were going on. With that being said – I’m very proud of our seniors. … I’m very proud of our team.”

Lawrence is pleased at how his offensive unit has been able to spread the wealth around this season. Eight different receivers made at least one catch Friday night for the Spartans.

“We have a lot of good players – a lot of good receivers. We’re even putting a back in the backfield, now and then for fun. We spread it around. When you do that, then teams can’t just focus on one (player),” Lawrence said.

Woodward registered its first points of the season, late in the first half.

And the Polar Bears did it in dramatic style.

Michael Carpenter intercepted a pass from Hall, and returned it 63 yards for a touchdown, cutting the deficit to 36-6.

However, that big defensive play by Carpenter proved to be the lone highlight of the game for Woodward.

For the game, Woodward’s offensive unit netted just 22 yards.

The Polar Bears mustered 81 yards in the air and registered a negative 59 yards on the ground.

Woodward quarterback Ramone Bell, Jr. was 9 of 16 passing with two interceptions.

Lawrence is especially pleased with his offensive line’s performance this season.

“Coach (DJ) Burris and Coach (Tyler) Huber do a great job with our O-line,” Lawrence said. “We have a veteran group up there; and they can move people. So, it’s nice to be able to do that. So, credit to our offensive line and what they do. They do a great job of protecting Ja’niaus (Hall). Also, we can run it a little bit when we need to.”
