Team of Wastewater Department employees heads to national contest

LIMA — The Wastewater Treatment Department is engaging in more than just their normal tasks. Four employees joined the operations challenge state competition and obtained second place overall. Due to their success, the team will now participate in the national competition in Chicago. The team consisted of employees Joe Welker, Ben Lovejoy, TJ Sturgill, Jordan Greeley and coach Jessica Preston.

“The OWA sponsors an event called Operations Challenge; it’s a five-event challenge or competition where four team members have to participate in each event,” Preston said. “There are different skills in the wastewater industry.”

The team participates in events including process control, laboratory events, safety events, collections event and maintenance events. Preston also said most of the events are timed and the teams receive a penalty if they are not completed correctly.

“Each event is combined with skills that we use at the wastewater plant and you put it in a competition setting,” Preston said. “We are excited to represent the city of Lima and the state of Ohio in Chicago.”

The competition will take place Oct. 2 through Oct. 4.
