Fire at Shirley Daley apartments sends one to hospital

LIMA — An apartment fire at Shirley Daley Senior Village on Friday sent one woman to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center with minor burns, Lima Fire officials said.

The Lima Fire Department arrived at the senior apartment complex at 1047 W. Spring St. around 9:40 a.m. Friday after a woman accidentally knocked over an ashtray, causing her garage to catch fire, according to Lima Fire Cpt. Lee Short, who said crews had the fire under control by 9:58 a.m.

Short estimated the damage, which was contained to one apartment, at $150,000.

There were no other reported injuries, he said.

Short credited the complex’s firewalls with preventing widespread damage but cautioned the public to properly discard cigarettes to prevent fires.
