Allen County Museum announces new director

LIMA — The Allen County Museum announced Dr. Christine Fowler Shearer as its new director Thursday.

Shearer, who has 20 years of experience in the museum field, said in the announcement that she is excited to take the position.

“I am excited to permanently join ACM’s team at this time, and I am humbled to step into the position at an exciting time for the museum,” she said in a statement. “With its recent strategic plan and vision, I look forward to working with the community to make the museum a vibrant resource and experience for everyone.”

In her career, Shearer has served as an advocate for the American Alliance of Museum’s Museum Advocacy Day and has extensive experience curating exhibitions and publishing as the Executive Director of the Cleveland Artists Foundation, the Executive Director of the Massillon Museum and the Development Director of the Canton Museum.

It is that resume that has existing museum officials like Museum Board of Directors President Jim Osmon just as excited for her hiring.

“Christine brings a unique expertise and vision to our museum,” he said in a statement. “The board of directors is looking forward to seeing the great momentum the museum has as it continues to move forward through the addition of new traveling exhibits, updates to our current exhibits, and expanded community engagement under Christine’s leadership.”

Shearer holds a Ph.D. in cultural art history from Warnborough College, Ireland, an M.A. in art history from Notre Dame and an undergraduate degree in art history and history at Kent State. She also attended the Getty Museum Leadership Institute in July 2006.

The Allen County Museum holds a collection of over 250,000 objects and artifacts and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
