Minster ties for sixth at girls golf tournament

HARROD — Minster posted the best area team score of 396 to tie Findlay for sixth place out 20 teams posting scores at Thursday’s Girls Colonial Golfers Club Tournament.

Minster was led by Ashley Meyer with a 96.

“My putting was definitely better than usual, but I couldn’t hit any greens, so I’m looking forward to having another 18 holes tomorrow (at the Celina Invitational), so I’ll probably go to the range tonight and work on my accuracy.”

Meyer believes that even though they came in second place at Colonial Golfers Club last year, she is happy with how this team looks early in the season.

“I think everyone’s in a good spot. We only lost one senior last year (Katie Heitkamp) and we have five returning on varsity so I think everyone’s done better since last year, and it should be a good season.”

Despite the sixth place finish, Minster head coach Debbie Ahrns was proud of her Division II team’s overall play against D-I schools. Minster’s finish “says a lot of credibility about our team. We have a strong, well experienced team, and they work well together, and I think they will mesh well and improve as the season moves forward.”

Ahrns believes the team built a lot of confidence going into MAC play next week. As the season goes on, Ahrns said “we will start to see Ashlyn (Homan) as she gets more defined, come in and do equally as well as Ashley (Meyer). They are kind of competing for that MAC player of the year.”

Taylor Homan, Ashlyn’s sister, won the title back in 2018. Ashlyn was four strokes back of Meyer with a 100 score Thursday.

Ahrns continued to stress the importance of building confidence throughout the season.

“I’m asking them to realize that the most important shot in golf is the next one. Today, they played with some very talented skilled golfers, and I think that’s a good thing because you can see where you need to improve and what you might need to do and that’ll be the motivation moving forward.”

Parkway took home ninth place with a 433 total led by Shay Boroff, who shot a 100.

Delphos Jefferson placed 12th with a 459 total led by Zada Grogg’s107.
