Lima council holds special meeting

LIMA — A special Lima City Council meeting was held on Tuesday following its regularly scheduled bi-monthly meeting on Monday. Council members voted on several ordinances and resolutions including a resolution regarding Issue 1, which was defeated in Tuesday’s election.

According to a previous article by The Lima News, the resolution was moved to a second reading on July 24 after failing on its first reading from a 5-2 with the absence of Council Member Anthony Wilkerson.

The resolution opposing Issue 1 failed from a 4-2 vote with the absence of Council Members Derry Glenn and Carla Thompson.

Council members did approve an ordinance for the City of Lima to enter into a contract with Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center. According to the communications letter, St. Rita’s Medical Center plans to construct a center for childcare to help aid in the shortage of childcare due to COVID-19.

”The funds we are using are to prepare for, prevent, or respond to the pandemic,” Director of Housing and Neighborhoods Andria Perkins said. “We had a great loss of childcare workers during the pandemic. This childcare facility will bring additional childcare workers to our community and will include swing shifts.”

Perkins also said the funding will be used for the renovation of the building that will house the center.

Members of the Council also approved the mayor to enter into the memorandum of understanding with Lima City Schools for the upcoming Lima Aquatic Center project.

An ordinance was amended to place a natural gas utility aggregation issue on the May ballot for the city. According to a previous article by The Lima News, residents voted and approved electric aggregation in the May election of this year.
