Suter’s prepares for season change

LIMA — The summer season of produce is just a few weeks away from transition. Suter’s Produce opens a stand every year for community members to enjoy fresh fruits and vegetables.

“Corn is our big take home; that is what we do each morning and focus on,” said Libby McVetta, a Suter’s employee. “We get there (the farm) at a quarter until six and pick fresh corn. People do love Suter’s corn. I have been here long enough; there’s nothing like it.”

McVetta said at the beginning of the season they often run out of produce. In the mid-season, she said they pick enough each day to sell to their customers.

McVetta also said not only is the produce great but also the environment is great.

“It’s like a family-owned company that just is very like loving and generous,” McVetta said. “So many times like they’ve sent us home with like produce that didn’t get sold that day or whatever. It’s just a really good environment. A lot of high school and college students work for them, which I think it’s awesome because you don’t see that with a lot of produce farms.”

In the fall, Suter’s opens its hayfield to community members. According to McVetta, the family-owned business is already preparing for the next season.

“Each year they have new ideas and they try and bring in new activities or games,” McVetta said. “This year they are adding football games. Preparing for it (fall) includes cutting the maze — they map it all out.”

According to McVetta, Suter’s is getting ready and planting pumpkins and sunflowers for the season to come. For more information visit suterproduce.com.
