Board of Elections prepares for November

LIMA — Allen County Board of Elections met Thursday morning for a meeting approving filed petitions and testing the poll machines. The board reportedly received signatures for petitions for the November ballot regarding reproductive rights and marijuana.

“We received petitions for the Reproductive Freedom Act (264),” Kathy Myer said. “We also received petitions for the Cannabis Issue. I have certified them with our numbers. We just have to get back to the Secretary of State.”

The petitions are not yet approved. The board has to send the signatures to Secretary of State Frank LaRose for official approval.

Before the potential amendments to the Ohio constitution, a special election will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 8 to determine the number of votes needed to make an amendment. The current law is 50% plus one vote. The special election will give the state of Ohio an opportunity to increase this percentage to 60% or vote to keep the percentage the same.

The board did approve petitions for candidates in the upcoming November election.
