Summer program helps students stay active

LIMA — Children are staying busy at the Lima YMCA. A Summer Enrichment Camp began at the beginning of June for students ages 6 through 12. According to Teen Leadership Development Director Brianna Keeler, the students experience weeks of fun and themed activities. This week students participated in scavenger hunts, obstacle courses and trivia games.

“The kids come here and we have a lot of activities for them that help them with their interests,” Keeler said. “We do obstacle courses with them to keep them healthy and then we do crafts and activities with them. It’s survivor week so we created tribal flags (like the show). Then they go swimming and we give them healthy snacks afterward.”

Almost 40 students joined the camp for three days of fun throughout the week until Aug. 18.

“We’re just trying to give them a fun summer camp experience that’s healthy and outgoing with their friends,” Keeler said. “We also go outside; we walk to go to lunch. A lot of the kids really like doing the arts and crafts. They may learn how to do things they don’t necessarily do all the time. When we do group projects, they learn how to work together.”

Keeler said the students are not only learning to work together but learning how to be competitive. They work out their energy by engaging in activities and ending the day with an hour and a half of swim.

Families interested in participating are still able to sign up for the summer program. The program starts at 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday each week. Parents are able to drop off their children earlier or pick them up later in the evening if necessary. Members of the YMCA must pay a fee of $95. Non-members pay $110.
