Lima schools hope to place levy renewal on November ballot

LIMA — Lima schools hopes to ask voters to approve a renewal levy to continue raising nearly $2.3 million a year .

The hope is to place the levy on the ballot in November. According to the school board agenda, the levy was last approved in May 2013. The 10-mill reportedly raised $2,278,014 per year for 10 years.

“(The levy) will help with the district’s costs of operating, including supplies, salaries and equipment,” said Heather Sharp, the district’s treasurer. “The governor’s budget sets limits on how much each district gets, so it’s important that we renew the levies that cost our taxpayers zero additional dollars. And this is one of those levies. No new money is collected, and our students will benefit from having the best educators and equipment available to them.”

The board hopes the current levy will be renewed for the next 10 years for continued revenue beginning in 2024.

“We kind of depend on it, especially not knowing the governor’s budget right now,” Sharp said. “We are looking at general upkeep, staff, improvements, supplies and basic maintenance.”

The next step for the city is to get approval from the auditor and turn it in to the Allen County Board of Elections by the August deadline.

“This is the standard I have to get this signed,” Sharp said. “We will take it to the board of elections, and then I will get the county auditor’s signature. We will move forward with from there.”
