Golf: Top seed knocked out of Lima City Men’s Golf Championship in match play opener

BLUFFTON — Kyle Ball’s experience in the Lima City Men’s Golf Championship consists of one day and two rounds.

But that one day on Thursday at the Bluffton Golf Club was a very memorable one.

Ball – the No. 32 seed after shooting an 82 in Thursday morning’s Championship Flight qualifying round – knocked off the No. 1 seed Joe Hobensack, who also was last year’s runner-up in the city tournament.

“This morning in my first round I think I was a little bit shaky – not making good putts, not hitting good tee shots, I was getting into trouble. I had two penalty strokes against me and shot 82, which is definitely not what I’m capable of,” Ball said.

“I definitely was glad to have a shot at redemption and barely sneaked in. I was the last seed to get into this round. I was definitely glad for a second chance,” he said. “I’ll take it. He is a very good golfer. It’s definitely an honor to move on and play another day.”

Ball moved to Lima from Bellevue four years ago but had not played in the city tournament before.

“I played in a couple tournaments up there (Bellevue) but this is the first time I’ve been able to get off work to play in the Lima city tournament. I’ve got four kids and a busy work schedule so I had to plan ahead. I looked at the dates and it was about a year in the making to make sure I had these dates off so I could play,” he said.

Zach Miller, last year’s champion, Guillermo Garron, who just finished his freshman season at UNOH, and Hobensack shot 71 to lead the Championship Flight qualifying round. Hobensack got medalist honors on a tie-breaker.

Miller, who plays for the University of Findlay, advanced to the second round of match play with a 7-and-6 win over Bryan Kohli on Thursday afternoon.

“I didn’t hit a whole lot of greens, I was kind of scrambling the whole round this morning. I played a lot better in the match play part. I made five birdies in the 12 holes we played,” he said.

Miller said being the returning champion is not something he thinks about. “I just go out and play,” he said.

Next up for Miller is a Friday morning match against Josh Hollar, his high school golf coach at Allen East, who is a two-time city champion. Miller defeated Hollar in the first round of match play last year.

Other winners in Thursday’s Championship Flight in match play were: Carson Harmon 3-and-2 over Brady Schroeder; Luke Turner 6-and-5 over Carter Schimmoeller; Braden Beachy 6-and-5 over Dylan Meyer; Kayne Richardson 6-and-5 over John Sizemore; William Seech 2-and-1 over Brian Kuhlman; Spencer Stubbs over Scott Geier 4-and-3; Bret Eley over K.C.
