Allen East tests student interview skills

HARROD — In lieu of a final exam, Allen East seniors enrolled in the high school’s senior seminar class participated in a series of mock interviews and resume reviews Wednesday with recruiters from the Lima Police Department, Mercy Health and other employers.

Students decorated the gymnasium with posters documenting their personal achievements and ambitions, which acted as visual aids as students discussed their resumes with recruiters.

Each interview session lasted 15 minutes, followed by a critique of the student’s resume.

“We want to prepare them for life after high school,” instructor Kristin Dixon said, “so we wanted to make sure that we are doing interview prep, we’re learning how to write thank you notes.”

Allen East’s senior seminar program focuses on preparing graduating seniors for life after high school, from career planning to college prep, financial literacy and other life skills, Dixon said. So rather than ask her students to take a final exam, Dixon asked her students to meet with at least three recruiters Wednesday.

The high school hosted a career fair following the mock interviews Wednesday, during which sophomores, juniors and seniors met with military recruiters, college representatives, prospective employers and financial institutions.
